But if you educate a woman, you educate a nation<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While we can all agree that education is a fundamental human right, we are sadly far from where we should be in terms of equal and universal access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">\n<p>The numbers speak for themselves:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\"><span lang=\"HU\">Women still account for almost two-thirds of the 750 million adults unable to read.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"><span lang=\"HU\">Current trends indicate that we will not get every girl into primary school until the year 2050.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"><span lang=\"HU\">And it is the poorest girls in low-income countries who have the lowest education completion rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\"><span lang=\"HU\">Girls in conflict and humanitarian situations\u00a0are nearly 2.5 times more likely to be out of school.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\"><span lang=\"HU\">And for the 35 million children around the world who have been forcibly displaced, nearly\u00a0half are out of school.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\"><i>Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">These undesirable trends are playing out in real-time, across the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Right now, in\u00a0<b>Haiti<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 where during my visit in November last year, I was able to meet with young school children \u2013 the fright of gang violence and civil unrest is limiting access to education to only those in \u2018safe zones\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<b>Gaza<\/b>, none \u2013\u00a0<b>I repeat, none<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 of the 600,000 school-age children can go to school due to well-documented and widespread devastation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">\n<p>In\u00a0<b>the Sudan<\/b>, an estimated 19 million children are out of school due to increased violence and insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">in\u00a0<b>Afghanistan<\/b>, girls are outright banned from school beyond the sixth grade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And in\u00a0<b>Ukraine<\/b>, students are amid the third year of disruption to education.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Dear Colleagues,<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These numbers are not just\u00a0<b>shocking<\/b>, to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The devastating impact on lives is both consequential and\u00a0<b>morally unacceptable<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">And the broader societal implications are\u00a0<b>vast\u00a0<\/b>and<b>\u00a0long-lasting<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are collectively denying ourselves better economies and stronger social systems due to our\u00a0<b>short-sighted<\/b>\u00a0unwillingness to empower half of our,\u00a0<b>just as talented, and sometimes more talented and able population<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And this is not confined to conflict zones or to the least developed countries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For those girls who are fortunate enough to receive an education, gender stereotypes and archaic practices often limit their participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">Yet, these are the very disciplines where we can all agree that\u00a0<b>MORE<\/b>\u00a0innovators are needed \u2013 not less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">\n<p>We see that unequal access to education \u2013 coupled with systems built against, not in favor of, women\u2019s empowerment \u2013 are limitations that haunt women and girls long into their careers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Across all regions, women are paid far less than men \u2013 with the gender pay-gap estimated at around 20 per cent globally.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And women tend to be overrepresented in certain types of work that are perceived as unskilled or low value, such as care jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Dear Friends<\/i>,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">There is simply no excuse, in 2024, for this to be the case.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The African proverb says it clearly,\u00a0<b>investing in women and girls\u2019 education<\/b>\u00a0<b>transforms societies<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">\n<p>Education is an SDG accelerator that has the potential to jumpstart action on every one of the goals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But this progress starts, arguably, with equal and equitable access to quality education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This requires lifting all barriers \u2013 real and perceived, visible, and invisible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It means ensuring safety and facilitating access.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">It means putting in place appropriate hygienic and sanitation services.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It means closing the digital divide and\u00a0<b>leveraging the power of innovative technologies to enhance women and girls\u2019 skills and learning<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">And \u2013 perhaps most important of all \u2013 it means changing the hearts and minds of the women and girls, men and boys, who form the communities around them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is all the more important if we want to end harmful stereotypes that are holding back women and girls in science, technology, engineering and math \u2013 so called STEM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">\n<p class=\"x_elementtoproof\">Imagine the benefits of MORE astronauts, more cancer researchers, more nuclear physicists, and economists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The untapped potential is a goldmine of intellectual capacity waiting for us to wake up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let us wait no more \u2014society\u00a0simply cannot afford to.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Excellencies, Dear Friends,<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It
