President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, Closes the First Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly \u2018Sustainability Week\u2019 with Call to Action on Energy<\/strong><\/p>\n

New York, 19 April 2024 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA),\u00a0Mr. Dennis Francis,\u00a0addressed delegates at the close of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly\u2019s first-ever Sustainability Week today, wrapping up five days of thematic discussions and calling for concerted and accelerated action on debt sustainability, as well as sustainable tourism, transport, infrastructure connectivity and energy.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Global Stocktake on Sustainable Energy for All, the PGA said, \u201cThe past decade has seen renewable energy surge in every corner of the globe, albeit not yet at the pace or scale required to either power the lives of all people, everywhere, nor to rein in the worst impacts of climate change. We need to accelerate the transitions to a clean and renewable energy systems, all the while recognizing different national situations, priorities, pathways, and approaches.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recognizing the immense strides made in securing sustainable energy for all, yet the persistent gaps that remain, PGA issued a Call to Action, which included extending access to electricity for over 600 million people; providing clean cooking solutions to over 2 billion people; rapidly accelerating the transitions to clean, renewable energy; dramatically scaling up finance and investment for developing countries; and boosting public-private partnerships, particularly for technology transfer for least developed countries.<\/p>\n

PGA added, \u201cI urgently call on Member States and other stakeholders, encompassing the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system, civil society, private sector, women, youth, academia, among others, to follow up on the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Energy for All, as well as to sustain and strengthen international dialogue and cooperation on energy at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, including through a potential Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ conference on energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Held from 15-19 April, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly Sustainability Week included high-level events on sustainable debt and socio-economic equality; sustainable tourism; sustainable transport; infrastructure connectivity; and the Global Stocktake marking the end of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s Decade for Sustainable Energy for All.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week, during the high-level meeting on tourism, PGA welcomed the General Assembly\u2019s endorsement of the Statistical Framework on Measuring Sustainability in Tourism. PGA will also submit, as an outcome of the High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Transport, his contribution to the implementation plan for the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Decade on Sustainable Transport.<\/p>\n

Amongst the high-level speakers and representatives were H.E. Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, and H.E. Robinah Nabbanja, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, who addressed the opening session on debt sustainability. H.E. Andrzej Duda, President of the Republic of Poland, provided keynote remarks to the High-Level Meeting on Infrastructure Connectivity.<\/p>\n

With a Presidency buffered between the 2023 SDG Summit, in September 2023, and the 2024 Summit of the Future, PGA used Sustainability Week to emphasize sector-by-sector progress across the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

At the same time, and recognizing the need for individual actions, PGA launched a campaign, called #ChooseSustainability, to encourage Member States, Missions, delegates, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Staff and the general public to commit to sustainable actions. Along with the participation of dozens of Member States and Permanent Missions to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, the campaign also saw over 150,000 \u2018actions\u2019 declared on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s Act Now app.<\/p>\n

PGA said, \u201cI am deeply grateful to all those who joined us and chose sustainability; but this is not a one-off and I fully intend to continue emphasizing this call to action throughout the remainder of my Presidency and in the lead-up to the Summit of the Future, in September.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly President Dennis Francis to attend the 67th<\/sup> <\/strong>session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Austria,<\/strong> and the 11th<\/sup> Global Baku Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan<\/strong><\/p>

New York, 12 March 2024 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency Mr. Dennis Francis, will undertake official travel to Vienna, Austria from 13 to 14 March 2024, and to Baku, Azerbaijan from 15 to 16 March 2024.<\/p>

In Vienna<\/strong>, the PGA will attend the opening of the 67th<\/sup> session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).\u00a0<\/p>

The PGA will highlight the role of the CND as policymaking body of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system with prime responsibility for drug-related matters. He also will underline the need to address the emergence of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, and the societal impacts of this ever-growing crisis.<\/p>

While in Vienna, the PGA will hold separate bilateral meetings with H.E. Mr. Alexander Schallenberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria; and H.E. Mr. Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the National Council of Austria.<\/p>

Furthermore, he will also hold separate meetings with H.E. Mr. Philbert Abaka Johnson, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Ghana to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOV, Chair of the 67th<\/sup> session of the CND; H.E. Mr. Ivo \u0160ramek, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Czechia to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOV, Chair of the 33rd<\/sup> session of the CCPCJ; Ms. Ghada Waly, Director-General of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOV and Executive Director of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵODC; Mr. Gerd Mueller, Director General of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO; and Mr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of CTBTO.<\/p>

The PGA will also use the opportunity of his visit to deliver a lecture at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, the oldest of its kind in the world, to engage academia and civil society on the work of the United Nations and the General Assembly.<\/p>

The PGA\u2019s delegation to Vienna includes his Deputy Chef de Cabinet, a Senior Political Affairs Adviser as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>

From Vienna, the President of the General Assembly will travel to Baku<\/strong>, Azerbaijan, to attend the 11th<\/sup> Global Baku Forum from 15 to 16 March 2024.<\/p>

The PGA will deliver a special address on the Forum\u2019s theme \u2018Fixing a Fractured World\u2019<\/em>, emphasizing the need for unity, solidarity, dialogue, and diplomacy to address ongoing geopolitical tensions; and with a view to restore the multilateral system as well as international cooperation.<\/p>

He will also participate in a panel discussion on the objectives that can be set for the 2024 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Climate Change Conference (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵFCCC, COP29)<\/strong> to be held in Baku at the end of 2024.<\/p>

During his official visit to Azerbaijan, the PGA will pay a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; and also hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Jeyhun Bayramov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Mr. Elnur Soltanov, Chief Executive Officer of the COP29 Presidency.<\/p>

The PGA\u2019s delegation to Baku includes his Chef de Cabinet, a Special Adviser on the Summit of the Future, a Deputy Team Leader of the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Team, as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>

Travel costs to Vienna and to Baku are covered by the OPGA\u2019s Trust Fund and the Republic of Azerbaijan, respectively.<\/p>
