The President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, spoke at the opening segment, this morning, in the GA Hall. The PGA stressed that sports promote health and well-being, the Sustainable Development Goals, healthy competition, and encourage youth to stay away from the path of crime. He praised the joint Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵODC and International Olympic Committee (IOC) initiative \u2013 \u201cSport against Crime: Outreach, Resilience, Empowerment (SCORE)\u201d to integrate sports into youth crime prevention initiatives. President Francis also highlighted that \u201cthreats to sport come in many forms \u2013 from competition manipulation, illegal betting, and corruption to transnational organized crime linked to sport competitions, athlete transfers, and sport administration.\u201d He believes that such issues demonstrate the need \u201cto strengthen legal frameworks, enhance research and understanding of evolving threats, and build capacity.\u201d Other speakers were representatives of DESA, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵODC, the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), and the International Olympic Committee Executive Board among others. The meeting is co-organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵODC). This afternoon, the PGA will deliver remarks at a side event on the margins of the High-Level Debate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA TO HOLD ELECTIONS FOR SECURITY COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵCIL AND PGA 79 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, 6 June, the General Assembly will hold two elections. In the morning, there will be the elections for the five non-permanent members of the Security Council, biennium 2025-2026. There are five seats available for five candidates from the African Group, the Asia-Pacific Group, the Latin American and Caribbean Group and the Western European and Others Group. The election will start at 10 a.m. at the GA Hall and some Member States\u2019 representatives are planning to deliver remarks after the vote. In the afternoon, Member States will return to the GA Hall to elect the President of the General Assembly for the 79th Session. The candidate for PGA 79 is the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, H.E., Mr. Philemon Yang. You are welcome to go to the stakeout area and ask questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IN VIDEO MESSAGE, PGA ASKS FOR Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵITY IN PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PGA Dennis Francis recorded a video message to mark World Environment Day which is being celebrated this year, in Riyadh, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In his message, the President of the General Assembly recalled that sustainability remains a top priority for his term. He asked Member States and stakeholders to unite in efforts to preserve the environment. The chosen theme for this year is &#8220;land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience&#8221;. Mr. Francis believes that the day offers also \u201cthe opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to incorporate a sustainability dimension in all our endeavors to protect our planet.\u201d According to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, there are 12 million hectares of land lost to degradation which affects food security, water supplies and risks significant economic losses. The PGA stressed that \u201chalting desertification, and building drought resilience are pivotal to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals\u201d. Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, spoke this morning, at the opening of the High-level Panel on Public accessibility and inclusivity: developing strategic initiatives to raise awareness on the role of and work of Ombudsman and mediator institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, good governance and the rule of law.<\/p><p>In his remarks, the PGA highlighted the relevance of Ombudsman and Mediator Institutions as \u201cguardians of human rights and as enablers of accountability and transparency for good governance.\u201d<\/p><p>President Francis added that they ensure that public authorities adhere to legal and highest ethical standards, forming an integral aspect of \u201cour ongoing efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals\u201d.<\/p><p>The high-level panel Francis will deliver remarks in a meeting to mark World Football Day which will take place each 25<sup>th<\/sup> of May, starting this year.<\/p><p>The resolution, introduced by Libya, was adopted by the General Assembly by consensus on 7 May.<\/p><p>This year, the world marks the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the first international football tournament in history as part of the 1924 Summer Olympic Games.<\/p><p>The PGA emphasizes the universal role of football which transcends borders and has the power to bring people together.<\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>PGA TO SPEAK AT INTERNATIONAL DIALOGUE ON MIGRATION<\/strong><\/p><p>The President of the General Assembly will take part, later today, in the 2024 International Dialogue on Migration (IDM) which opened on Tuesday, 21 May.<\/p><p>The first session of the Dialogue is taking place under the theme \u201cFacilitating regular pathways to a better future: harnessing the power of migration\u201d.<\/p><p>The meeting is focusing on how to create better opportunities for people in the move in face of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.<\/p><p>According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there are at least 281 million migrants in the world, which equates to 3.6 per cent of the global population or one in 30 persons.<\/p><p>The PGA will deliver remarks alongside the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Ms. Amy Pope, and the President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), H.E.
