A very good afternoon to you all.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Let me begin by recognizing the extraordinary collective power in this room.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The power of you \u2013 the women\u2019s organizations, peacebuilders, human rights defenders, and of course, women peacekeepers \u2013 doing the seen, and often unseen, heavy lifting to help bring about a future that is bright, stable, equitable and accountable to the promise of peace in the Republic of South Sudan, and the wider region.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
You are the ones shaping the arc of progress towards this supreme goal.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
Indeed, you are working in a challenging political and security landscape.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
And equally, you are registering formidable gains.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
Thanks to the tireless work of women in uniform, South Sudan\u2019s security sector today has a women\u2019s network supporting women to find ways to boost their participation in the country\u2019s peace process.1\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
We also see greater integration of female engagement teams \u2013 responding to cultural and other unique concerns across South Sudan\u2019s diverse communities.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
And I highly commend the capacity-building activities that women in uniform have carried out in response to sexual gender-based violence and conflict related sexual violence.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
This is particularly important for ensuring the fulfillment of human rights for all people in South Sudan \u2013 including the rights to health and education, and particularly for young women and girls.\u202f\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
Indeed, women in uniform are role models, inspiring tomorrow\u2019s women and girls to advocate for their own rights and participation \u2013 in South Sudan, the wider region and around the world.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f<\/div>\n
To reinforce these efforts, the General Assembly is exploring ways and means to support the women, peace and security agenda<\/b> \u2013 by ensuring a holistic Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ approach to interventions on this theme.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
I will do my part to harness the General Assembly\u2019s main strength: mobilizing Member States around the political, economic, humanitarian, social and human rights issues that animate the work of the entire Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
With that, I turn the floor over to you.\u202f\u00a0<\/div>\n
