PRESS BRIEFING <\/strong><\/p>\n BY MONICA GRAYLEY,\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n SPOKESPERSON FOR\u00a0GENERAL ASSEMBLY\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n PRESIDENT DENNIS FRANCIS<\/strong><\/p>\n United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n 23 August 2024<\/p>\n Video link<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Good afternoon, everyone!<\/p>\n PGA CIRCULATES DETAILS OF HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, has written to Member States with a concept note and logistics details for the High-level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance.<\/p>\n The event, scheduled for 26 September, in New York, will be held under the theme: \u201cInvesting in the present and securing our future together: accelerating multisectoral global, regional and national actions to address antimicrobial resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n Member States, observers of the General Assembly, representatives of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ System, civil society, non-governmental organizations, academia, the private sector and persons affected by AMR, among others, are expected to attend the meeting.<\/p>\n On 15 May, the PGA held a multi-stakeholder hearing, which was attended by over 300 stakeholders from across the globe. They discussed stakeholder perspectives, experiences and recommendations on urgent actions and investments necessary to accelerate progress toward addressing global health challenges and the threat of AMR.<\/p>\n In his letter, President Francis informed Member States and other participants that the High-level Meeting will consist of an opening segment, a plenary, two interactive multi-stakeholder panels, and a closing segment.<\/p>\n The meeting will start at 10 a.m. and is expected to conclude at 6 p.m. on 26 September.<\/p>\n Panel 1 will address the urgent antimicrobial resistance crisis across the human, animal, plant, and environmental sectors through equity, access, building awareness, and innovation.<\/p>\n Panel 2 will discuss human health, animal health and welfare, agrifood systems, and protecting the environment to tackle antimicrobial resistance, through integrated surveillance, capacity-building, sustainable resources, financing, and investment.<\/p>\n The high-level meeting is expected to approve a concise and action-oriented political declaration with\u00a0a shared vision including the consideration of measurable targets and objectives on mobilizing political will and action to address\u00a0the drivers, sources and challenges of antimicrobial resistance, agreed in advance by consensus through intergovernmental negotiations, to be submitted by the President of the General Assembly for adoption by the Assembly.<\/p>\n In 2016 the first high-level meeting on AMR resulted in a political declaration that laid the foundation for global action against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).<\/p>\n According to the World Health Organization, AMR is one of the top global public health and development threats. It is estimated that bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27\u00a0million global deaths in 2019.<\/p>\n The World Bank estimates that it could result in US$\u00a01\u00a0trillion additional healthcare costs by 2050, and up to US$\u00a03.4\u00a0trillion gross domestic product (GDP) losses per year by 2030.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n ON INTERNATIONAL DAY, PGA PAYS TRIBUTE TO INDIVIDUALS WHO FOUGHT AGAINST SLAVE TRADE <\/strong><\/p>\n President Dennis Francis issued a post on his X social media account to mark this International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.<\/p>\n The PGA said that, on this day \u201cwe remember the courageous individuals who fought against the brutalities of the transatlantic slave trade, forever changing the course of history.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr. Francis also stressed that: \u201ctheir struggle reminds us of the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n The PGA invited all \u201cto honor their legacy by continuing the fight for equality and justice, ensuring that such atrocities are\u00a0never\u00a0repeated.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n TWO STUDENTS FROM NEW YORK PUBLIC SCHOOL ASSUMED ROLE OF \u201cPGA FOR A DAY\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n President Dennis Francis welcomed, on Thursday, for the first time in the history of Presidency\u2019s Office, two students for a full day of activities as a \u201cPGA for a Day\u201d.<\/p>\n The exercise \u201cPGA for a Day\u201d aimed to be a transformative and enriching experience for the two New York-based students.<\/p>\n Under President Francis’s mentorship, they participated in meetings, interacted with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ officials, and gained insights into the responsibilities of international leadership and the challenges of diplomacy. They spoke to the press here in an impromptu press conference accompanied by President Francis and concluded the day asking questions to the PGA and being introduced to the GA Hall.<\/p>\n The students attend the New York City Public School\u2019s Global Leaders Academy programme. They were selected by their respective schools, based on their academic excellence and after an essay contest on the Sustainable Development Goals and the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ work.<\/p>\n The PGAs for a Day were Ms. Fariha Akter, 15 years old, from Bangladesh, who\u00a0 attends the\u00a0Bronx Center\u00a0for Science and Mathematics in the Bronx, and Mr. Erik Ponomarev, 16 years old, from Russia, who goes to Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n They also met with the Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, Mr. Felipe Paullier, and Mr. Daniel del Valle Blanco, Chair of Youth Advisory to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Habitat and former Ambassador of the International Youth Organization to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/p>\n On our YouTube channel, you will have the entire press conference. Mr. Francis will take part in the opening segment alongside the Secretary-General of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, Mr. Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the President of the 79th Session, Mr. Phil\u00e9mon Yang, and a representative of a Member State affected by adverse effects of sea-level rise.<\/p> The multistakeholder panels will start at 10:30 a.m. with a debate on \u201csea-level rise and its legal dimension\u201d, which will be followed by \u201cadaptation, finance, and resilience in relation to sea-level rise\u201d.<\/p> The third panel, which takes place at 3 p.m. will discuss \u201clivelihoods, socio-economic challenges, and culture and heritage in relation to sea-level rise\u201d followed by the last debate on \u201cknowledge, data and science to inform sea-level rise risk assessments and decision making\u201d.<\/p> The accelerating pace of sea-level rise is increasingly impacting coastal states. Many developing countries, especially Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) lack the needed financial resources and technical capacity to anticipate the impacts.<\/p> One of the panels will address the specific vulnerabilities of women and girls to sea-level rise and promoting their equal participation in adaptation planning and implementation.<\/p> The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that, by 2050, global sea levels will rise between 15 and 30 centimetres, on average, with greater increases expected in equatorial regions, particularly the Pacific.<\/p> Close to one billion people living in low-lying coastal zones will be directly affected due to rising sea levels and climate impacts.<\/p> More information on the PGA\u2019s website www.un.org\/pga\/78<\/a>.<\/p>
