GENERAL ASSEMBLY APPROVES WORLD RURAL DEVELOPMENT DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

This morning, the General Assembly adopted draft resolution A\/78\/L.84\/Rev. 2 which declared 6 July as World Rural Development Day.<\/p>\n

Member States declared that the new World Day aims to highlight the critical importance of rural development and transformation for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

The text also recognized the critical role and contribution that women in rural areas make to enhance agricultural development, improve food security and to eradicate rural poverty whilst promoting their economic empowerment and full access to land ownership and decent work.<\/p>\n

The declaration of the World Rural Development Day was adopted during the 107th<\/sup> plenary meeting, this morning, which also considered several draft resolutions, and was chaired by the PGA.<\/p>\n

PRESIDENT FRANCIS TO BE FEATURED IN FAREWELL OP-ED <\/strong><\/p>\n

This afternoon, the newspaper The National in the United Arab Emirates, will publish a farewell opinion article by the President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis.<\/p>\n

The PGA wrote about his Presidency and the work of the 78th<\/sup> Session as well as the preparations for the Summit of the Future, which will take place on 22 and 23 September.<\/p>\n

Mr. Francis highlighted the need for a \u201cmultilateral system that is agile, evolutionary and is well equipped to meet the challenges of the times.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said that he is \u201cconvinced that rebuilding trust between nations, reigniting global solidarity, and accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda are not just lofty ideals; they are imperatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The PGA firmly believes that the upcoming Summit of the Future, which will bring together world leaders, civil society, and stakeholders from across the globe, \u201cis designed to inject much-needed vigour into our multilateral system and an opportunity that cannot be missed to acknowledge the shortcomings of the present order, and to act to rectify them.\u201d<\/p>\n

PGA TO HOLD FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE ON MONDAY, 9 SEPTEMBER<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, will be here in the Press Briefing Room, on Monday, to hold his last press conference as PGA.<\/p>\n

The conference will start at 11 a.m. with opening remarks by the President, which will last approximately 5 minutes, and will be followed by your questions.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, President Francis will present the main highlights of the 78th<\/sup> session of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly, including the convening of the first-ever Sustainability Week, elevating issues such as sea-level rise and youth engagement on the agenda of the General Assembly, the outcome of the 10th Emergency Special Session (resumed), his official visits including to Ukraine, South Sudan and Haiti, as well as his Advisory Boards on Gender Equality and on Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States, respectively.<\/p>\n

We look forward to welcoming you on Monday at 11 a.m. here.<\/p>\n

Today, I am holding our last press briefing. On Monday, I will see you for the press conference with the PGA and on Tuesday, by the time of the noon briefing, another PGA will be in the office, President Yang.<\/p>\n

Good afternoon, everyone! This is our last week before the press conference by the PGA, which will take place on 9 September at 11 a.m. which will be also the last full day of President Francis in the Office.<\/p>

PGA FRANCIS AND PGA-ELECT YANG TAKE PART IN HANDOVER RETREAT<\/strong><\/p>

The President of the General Assembly (PGA), Mr. Dennis Francis, is taking part today in the 14th<\/sup> Annual General Assembly Retreat under the theme \u201cTowards a Stronger Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly\u201d.<\/p>

The meeting, which takes place in New York, is being facilitated by the Permanent Mission of Finland with the support of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM). The retreat will include a Q&A session moderated by the Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations, H.E. Ms. Elina Kalkku.<\/p>

In his opening remarks, President Francis highlighted the achievements of his session and unforeseen developments which reminds the entire PGA\u2019s Office that: \u201cThe General Assembly may have a plan, but global events can \u2013 and indeed, do \u2013 significantly alter priorities, sometimes overnight, and determine how the session will unfold.\u201d President Francis believes that \u201ca methodical focus on ensuring a holistic perspective across the priorities\u201d is extremely important given the ongoing global developments and any future challenges.<\/p>

PGA-elect Mr. Phil\u00e9mon Yang also delivered remarks in the session followed by discussions and presentations on the GA revitalization, the Pact for the Future, and cooperation with other parts of the United Nations, among other topics.<\/p>

The purpose of the retreat is to contribute to the revitalization of the General Assembly and provide an opportunity for the elected members to familiarize themselves with the work of the GA.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

GA TO CONSIDER DRAFT RESOLUTION TO ENHANCE PARTICIPATION BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES<\/strong><\/p>

The President of the General Assembly has informed Member States that he intends to submit a draft resolution entitled \u201cEnhancing the participation of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 representatives and institutions in meetings of relevant United Nations bodies on issues affecting them\u201d to the GA for action.<\/p>

Mr. Dennis Francis said that the draft resolution A\/78\/L.106 will be presented in a plenary meeting under agenda item 68 \u201cRights of Indigenous Peoples\u201d to be announced shortly.<\/p>

In February, the PGA appointed two co-facilitators for the consultations on potential further measures to enhance the participation of Indigenous Peoples' representatives and institutions in relevant United Nations meetings on issues affecting them: H.E. Mr. Bob Rae, Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations and H.E. Mr. Victor Garcia Toma, Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations. This process includes two Advisers from Indigenous Peoples, Dr. Claire Charters and Mr. Belkacem Lounes, who were appointed in April.<\/p>

If the draft resolution is adopted, the GA will decide on continuing its consideration of possible further measures to enhance the participation of indigenous peoples at its eightieth session and will request the GA President to appoint two co-facilitators from Member States and two advisers from Indigenous Peoples \u201cwith the aim to adopt procedural and institutional steps\u201d. The process shall include consultations with indigenous peoples\u2019 representatives and institutions from all regions of the world as an input to the intergovernmental process.<\/p>
