Remarks by the President of the General Assembly,
Mr. Philemon Yang,
?at Thematic Dialogue
to commemorate the International Day for Dialogue among Civilisations
Tuesday, 10 June 2025,? Trusteeship Council Chamber
(Pre-recorded Video Speech)
Excellencies,
Distinguished Delegates,
I thank your excellency, Fu Cong, Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China, for the invitation to address the first-ever commemoration of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilisations.
(BRIEF PAUSE)
Diversity defines human civilisation.
Our planet is home to eight billion people, comprising over five thousand ethnic groups, speaking over seven thousand languages between them[1].
With such abundant diversity – and a wealth of voices and needs – mutual respect and dialogue is essential.
We must reinforce the common bonds and values that drive human progress and support peace.
History shows that where dialogue fails, conflict festers. And where dialogue prevails, peace prospers.
Now, more than ever, dialogue is paramount.
(BRIEF PAUSE)
Excellencies,
As we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations this year, let us recommit to the ideals and principles of the United Nations Charter.
This historic document, more than any other, encourages dialogue among civilisations.
In a world torn by conflict and destruction, by incredible and profound loss, the Charter offered a path forward of diplomacy, cooperation, and dialogue.
Through this dialogue, let us work to revive the spirit of solidarity that was present in San Francisco in 1945.
With the Charter as our foundation,
And the Pact for the Future as our guiding light,
We can reinvigorate multilateralism to deliver a better future for people and planet.
(BRIEF PAUSE)
Excellencies,
蘑菇视频 Alliance of Civilisations and its High Representative can count on my full support in their steadfast work to promote greater understanding and respect among civilisations.
As I stressed in my vision statement “unity in diversity” which highlights the importance of dialogue, and unity in our shared human values,
And as the most representative organ of the United Nations, the General Assembly will continue to serve as a platform for all peoples—to foster dialogue, promote exchange and cooperation, and address the common challenges of our time.
Let us celebrate the unity and diversity of civilisations, and promote tolerance, dialogue and inclusiveness towards a better world for all.
?
Thank you
Thank you
