The year 2024 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the adoption of United Nations General Assembly resolution 54\/134 which proclaimed the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women<\/a>. This date was selected to honour the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 and whose activism and resistance galvanized global attention to eliminate violence against women.<\/p>\n Over the past 25 years, the international community has taken significant steps to address violence against women and girls, recognizing that violence against women and girls is a major impediment to the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls and violates and impairs the full enjoyment of all their human rights and fundamental freedoms.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Format” _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n The high-level meeting will take place in-person on 25 November 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. in the General Assembly Hall at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. A more detailed programme will be circulated in due course.<\/p>\n The meeting will consist of an opening segment followed by a plenary segment for statements by Member States and Observers of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n Inscription on the list of speakers for the high-level meeting will open on the e-deleGATE platform on Monday, 4 November 2024 at 10 a.m. and close on Wednesday, 20 November
