box_shadow_vertical_tablet=&#8221;0px&#8221; box_shadow_blur_tablet=&#8221;40px&#8221; box_shadow_spread_tablet=&#8221;0px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Remarks by the President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly,<\/strong><br \/><strong>Mr. Philemon Yang<\/strong><br \/><strong>Opening of the sixty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women<\/strong><br \/><strong>10 March 2025, General Assembly Hall<\/strong><br \/><strong>[As Delivered]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n<p>I thank his Excellency Abdulaziz Alwasil, Chair of the Bureau of the Commission on the Status of Women, for his leadership in overseeing preparations for this session.<\/p>\n<p>I also commend Member States for negotiating a political declaration that reaffirms the relevance of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and also outlines actions to accelerate the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s session is a landmark one.<\/p>\n<p>We commemorate thirty years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.<\/p>\n<p>We also mark the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women and Peace and Security.<\/p>\n<p>Over the decades, we have seen significant progress in advancing the rights of women and girls.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 More countries now have legislation to promote gender equality, penalize violence against women and girls, and combat discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Politically, while full parity remains elusive, there are now substantially more women in parliament than 30 years ago\u2014an increase from just 11 percent to 20 percent globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 More countries have national plans that recognize and promote women\u2019s roles in the peace and security agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 And more girls are in school today compared to thirty years ago.<\/p>\n<p>While we remain far from our goals, there exists momentum we must build upon.<\/p>\n<p>Excellences,<\/p>\n<p>Mesdames et Messieurs,<\/p>\n<p>La D\u00e9claration et le Programme d\u2019action de Beijing restent l\u2019agenda mondial le plus complet, ambitieux et largement approuv\u00e9 en mati\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 des genres et de r\u00e9alisation des droits humains des femmes et des filles.<\/p>\n<p>Cela est r\u00e9affirm\u00e9 par le Pacte pour l&#8217;avenir, qui reconna\u00eet que le d\u00e9veloppement durable ne pourra tout simplement pas \u00eatre atteint si les femmes et les filles continuent \u00e0 se voir refuser l\u2019ensemble de leurs droits et opportunit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Pourtant, des d\u00e9fis majeurs persistent. Nombre d&#8217;entre eux sont renforc\u00e9s par des normes sociales profond\u00e9ment ancr\u00e9es et des obstacles syst\u00e9miques qui perp\u00e9tuent la discrimination contre les femmes et les filles.<\/p>\n<p>En effet, aujourd\u2019hui l\u2019inaction autant que les politiques r\u00e9trogrades menacent de faire reculer les acquis durement obtenus en mati\u00e8re de droits des femmes.<\/p>\n<p>De plus, l&#8217;urgence politique et les ressources mises \u00e0 disposition ne sont pas \u00e0 la hauteur de l&#8217;ampleur du d\u00e9fi auquel nous sommes confront\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Pensez-y : au rythme actuel des progr\u00e8s, il faudra 137 ans pour sortir toutes les femmes et les filles de l&#8217;extr\u00eame pauvret\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Et il faudra encore 68 ans pour mettre fin au mariage des enfants.<\/p>\n<p>Ces r\u00e9alit\u00e9s sont inacceptables et devraient nous alarmer tous.<\/p>\n<p>Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n<p>As an International Gender Champion, I am committed to promoting gender equality throughout the work of the United Nations and across all my priorities.<\/p>\n<p>I am particularly focused on women\u2019s economic empowerment and rights.<\/p>\n<p>As the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals nears, we must be resolute in delivering on the promise of Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>To end poverty and enhance economic development, we must unleash women\u2019s full potential.<\/p>\n<p>And we are at a defining moment.<\/p>\n<p>I believe it is possible to achieve gender equality in our lifetime, if we seize this opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>It demands greater resources, decisive legislation and policies, the dismantling of discriminatory norms, and institutional reforms.<\/p>\n<p>At the international level, it requires a steadfast commitment to leveraging multilateralism to uphold and advance gender equality, including through the revitalization of the Commission on the Status of Women.<\/p>\n<p>With
