Transcript\u00a0of the Press Briefing by the Spokesperson of the President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n (Tuesday, 26 August 2025)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The following is a near-verbatim\u00a0transcript\u00a0of today\u2019s briefing.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Good afternoon, everyone<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang strongly condemns the Israeli strikes at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis that killed civilians, including medical personnel and journalists.<\/p>\n The killing of innocent Palestinian civilians, of journalists and of medical personnel is unacceptable and must stop.<\/p>\n The President reiterates his urgent demand for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.\u00a0 Humanitarian organizations must be given full, rapid, safe and unhindered access to deliver badly needed assistance in large scale to the civilian population in Gaza and Israeli hostages who are still being held under extremely dire conditions must be released.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Resolutions adopted<\/strong><\/p>\n The President welcomes a number of resolutions adopted yesterday and this morning. These include:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Key moments ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n 79th<\/sup>\u00a0session of the General Assembly is drawing to a close<\/strong><\/p>\n Lastly, as you know the 79th session of the General Assembly is drawing to a close and the 80th session will soon open \u2013 the handover is on 9th\u00a0September.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Questions and Responses<\/strong><\/p>\n Question<\/strong>: You said that there will be a debate on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on September 4. So is there any plan to pass any resolution at the meeting?<\/p>\n Response<\/strong>: That is, sorry that, let me correct you, that is on Ukraine. That is an annual meeting on Ukraine.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Question<\/strong>: And I know the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA took up the Security Council reform this morning. Has any progress on the Security Council reform recently? And if not, is any time frame for that?<\/p>\n Response<\/strong>: Yes, so the decision has been made, of course, to roll over the discussions around Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Security (Council) reform to the 80th session. There has been progress, because, as you know, with regard to the adoption of the Pact for the future last September, it really built a strong foundation for the reform of the Security Council. So conversations around the Security Council, you know, reform that, has been, those have been energized, and Member States have been really more engaged than ever in the discussions. I think for the first time there was a discussion on the limitations of the veto which is huge, a huge moment so we will see what happens in the 80th session.<\/p>\n Question<\/strong>: What is the opinion of the PGA on assigning a special envoy on the protection of journalism, journalists?<\/p>\n Response<\/strong>:\u00a0 I believe that will be very important. He is really, you know, he believes that the role of media workers, journalists, is critical. He has said before, he made a statement the last time I was here, in terms of what had happened to journalists in Gaza.
