Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Day for South-South Cooperation 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n

[As Delivered]<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In Fiji, local communities are being electrified by solar panels supported by India.<\/p>\n

In Kyrgyzstan, cooperation with China is employing telemedicine to connect new mothers to doctors.<\/p>\n

And in Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia, police forces are sharing best practices to combat gender-based violence in the digital sphere.<\/p>\n

These examples highlight how South-South and Triangular cooperation is evolving to capitalise on new opportunities and innovations, and to address the inherent challenges these advances present.<\/p>\n

And they reveal to us, actually, the very DNA of these United Nations, which is about helping each other out in the best way we can and learning from each other.<\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

In this regard it is my pleasure to join you in commemorating this International Day of South-South Cooperation.<\/p>\n

I commend Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP and the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Office for South-South Cooperation for organising this event.<\/p>\n

And I applaud your choice of theme, new opportunities and innovation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As we move deeper into the 21st century, our world is being reshaped by rapid advances, from artificial intelligence to new ways of connecting and communicating.<\/p>\n

It is imperative upon us that we can leverage these tools, as well as use them to solve long-standing challenges.<\/p>\n

Both the Secretary-General\u2019s Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ80 initiative and the implementation of the Pact for the Future are likely to have an impact on how and where South-South Cooperation is undertaken.<\/p>\n

The same holds true for the reform of the international financial architecture, where the emergence of multilateral development banks in the Global South has already been a gamechanger.<\/p>\n

We must be proactive in ensuring that these lessons learned are shared, and that whatever changes occur strengthen, rather than undermine South-South Cooperation.<\/p>\n

This includes reaffirming that South-South cooperation is an important element of development, with proven results in helping to eradicate poverty, combat inequalities, and deliver on each of the SDGs.<\/p>\n

It includes the promotion and strengthening of inter-regional South-South cooperation alliances.<\/p>\n

And it includes addressing persistent challenges, including data limitations, obstacles to coordination, and resource constraints.<\/p>\n

The adoption last year of the Pact of the Future, coupled with the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, offer a path toward a re-invigorated development system, including better, more networked, and more supported South-South cooperation.<\/p>\n

The responsibility is therefore upon us to ensure that efforts to implement the Pact and reform the global financial architecture recognize that South-South Cooperation is not ancillary to development, but an essential component.<\/p>\n

I opened the 80th session just two days ago with a plea for all of us\u2014north and south, east and west\u2014to come together, better together.<\/p>\n

If the General Assembly is the literal expression of this on the world stage, offering space for dialogue and diplomacy, then South-South cooperation is the local and regional manifestation of the same.<\/p>\n

It is about people and communities sharing, problem-solving, and uniting to tackle common challenges.<\/p>\n

About powering communities an ocean away with solar panels.<\/p>\n

About connecting mothers and doctors on zoom.<\/p>\n

And about teaching law enforcement how to recognize and protect against online hate and abuse.<\/p>\n

I truly believe that we are, in every respect, better together.<\/p>\n

I look forward to working with each of you in the session ahead to make that point, that we are indeed better together.<\/p>\n
