A Commemoration of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ@80: A Living Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Good evening,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Many of you may have seen the article in the New York Times a few days ago about the postcard sent from the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in 1953.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Alan Ball, from Idaho, sent the postcard to his family. It was lost to time, but resurfaced, 72 years later.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I found it interesting that even back then this young man visited the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ on his stopover in New York.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ was still new then, yet even then it mattered to people.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We often forget, in the trenches of bureaucracy, politics and diplomacy, how much this institution matters to ordinary people.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To the people like Mr. Ball \u2013 and the one million visitors who come through the doors each year.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And to those in every country of the world whose lives are impacted by the work we, you, do.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ask the displaced how the work of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHCR or IOM has mattered to them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ask a person living with HIV\/AIDS how the work of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵAIDS has mattered.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Or ask the farmer in the Sahel how seeds, provided by FAO, has mattered.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Every single day, you, the living legacy of this organization, affect the lives\u00a0of people around the world.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You defend those most vulnerable.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You stand for human rights, even in the darkest days.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You champion the plight of the unseen, the unheard, and the forgotten.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mr. Secretary-General,<\/p>\n

Madame Deputy Secretary-General,<\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On Monday we will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is a moment to celebrate the people who make this institution.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But it is also a moment of profound reflection on what this institution represents.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What it represented to the people of 1945, who sought refuge from the scourge of war.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What it represents to the people today, who call out for the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ to live up to its promise.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It comes at a critical moment of change and evolution within the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ itself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As I will say in my remarks on Monday \u2013 change is necessary \u2013 but it must be built on the principles and spirit of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Principles that are upheld every day by the women and men of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, by you.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Who have dedicated their lives<\/p>\n

to humanitarian relief,<\/p>\n

to peacekeeping,<\/p>\n

to the protection of human rights,<\/p>\n

and to sustainable development.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Who have, far too often, given those lives in service\u2026 in Iraq, in Gaza\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

168 women and men lost their lives in 2024 alone standing up for the principles of our Charter.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These are the people \u2013 the heroes \u2013 who embody multilateralism in action.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dear colleagues,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is an honour to join you in celebrating this living legacy of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You carry out the quiet, often thankless work, away from the limelight, yet indispensable to this Organization\u2014to making it stronger, to make it better, together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You are the reason we can take pride in the United Nations today, the reason why a young visitor walking through these halls may look back, eighty years from now, with pride at having once stood here.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I thank you.<\/p>\n
