\n

 <\/p>\n

When you were young do you remember people asking you: what do you want to be when you grow up?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I guess we are all quite alike as kids or as children\u2026<\/p>\n

We all have dreams.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I, for example, wanted to be a gardener. Then a gymnast. Later a journalist. And, eventually, I became a Member of Parliament.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But no matter at what stage of these dreams, I was always told, by my parents, by the teachers, by the people around me, the same thing:\u00a0If you work hard, you can make it.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, we know even though all around the world there are kids with these kind of dreams, that is not true for everyone.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The world, as it stands, is not equal. It\u2019s not fair. Not fair for everyone. The world is not just.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A girl growing up in South Africa \u2014 where unemployment tops 30 percent \u2014 faces a much steeper climb.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A boy in Somalia \u2014 where the vast majority of children simply do not attend school \u2014 may never even learn to read, let alone become a journalist.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We all have dreams. But for too many, those dreams never manifest; they are held back by obstacles. Obstacle after obstacle.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How many had to drop out of school during COVID because remote learning wasn\u2019t possible?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How many would-be doctors will never study medicine because there are simply no medical schools to attend?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How many potential Nobel Prize winners will never be discovered \u2014 working on a factory line at age fourteen instead of finishing school?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The world can be deeply unfair and unjust.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That is why this summit matters. That is why the Doha Declaration \u2014 this moment \u2014 matters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because these are not just dreams.<\/p>\n

These are rights.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rights that have been reaffirmed time and again \u2014 in Copenhagen thirty years ago, and in 2015 with the SDGs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We made these promises to all children around the world; to help people achieve their dreams. But made these promises also because we know that a healthy, functioning society depends on the creativity, skills, and dedication of its people, of all its people.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And that relegating millions to poverty, wasted potential, and insecurity is a recipe for instability.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Working on all the 17 SDG goals is not an act of charity, it\u2019s in our own self self-interest.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We have seen how easy it is for gangs or militias to recruit young people who are desperate and starved for opportunities.<\/p>\n

In the Lake Chad region with Boko Haram.<\/p>\n

In Somalia, where lost livelihoods turned fishers into pirates.<\/p>\n

In Haiti, where armed gangs, mostly young men, now dominate Port-au-Prince.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They all had dreams; but they were not able to live up to them because the hurdles were too high.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Addressing such deep inequality requires all of us: governments, the private sector, civil society, and international institutions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Governments as underlined in the Doha Declaration must strengthen labour laws, ensure access to quality education, and expand vocational training.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Civil society, and we had the strong civil society forum this morning, should partner with academia and grassroots movements to identify gaps and drive innovation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And the private sector, and we had also the private sector forum this morning, can open doors for new talent, investing in youth employment and using technology to connect people with opportunity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When we work together, we deliver results.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve seen it here in Doha.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the Solutions Forum on Monday, even a day before the official opening, we heard inspiring examples \u2014 like Nigeria\u2019s Value Chain Innovation Hubs, which are training thousands of young people in renewable energy, agriculture, and technology. To deliver on the dreams of their younger generation, to become an engineer, a farmer, a scientist, maybe even a Nobel Peace prize winner one day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their goal is not just to find jobs, but to create them: to produce 50,000 skilled professionals and 5,000 micro-enterprises by 2030.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There are exciting and innovative opportunities available if we work together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the same time, we must remember that even the most innovative new ideas and sectors can still fall prey to past mistakes and old biases.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Investments and innovations have to be coupled with strong legislation and protecting rights.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Again, I experienced that myself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I was younger, not dreaming of becoming a gardener anymore but trying to finance my studies, I worked in a tire factory. One day, I learned that a male colleague, who was actually a friend of mine, who sat just next to me, earned 1 euro more per hour for exactly the same work.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I asked the boss, I was told \u201cwell he could fix the machine if it broke.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I was quite shocked. He was my friend and I knew him, he had \u2018two left hands\u2019, and I was a girl who had grown up in the countryside and had to learn at the age of 10 how to fix tires because there was no bus in my village.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Clearly the different payment was out of old bias, they didn\u2019t even ask at the beginning if we could fix that machine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Obviously, it was unfair, and it needed organizations like the ILO, constantly advocating for worker\u2019s rights, for women workers’ rights, for new legislation to be adopted in the European Union and in Germany, guaranteeing equal pay for equal work.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Organizations like ILO, they not only matter they are there to end injustices.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And we know that the work you are doing Mr. Director-General for the International Labour Organization, you are doing all over the world.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In places like Uzbekistan, where the ILO helped to eliminate child labour in cotton fields, opening up a new sector for ethically produced and globally traded cotton.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And here in Qatar, where the ILO has been a strong partner working with the Government to ensure the labor rights of migrant workers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Each of us benefits, all around the world, all of us benefit, often without realizing it, from the standards the ILO has helped to define.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s up to us to ensure that every child indeed has the opportunity to benefit from those not only ILO rights, but worker rights, from all of our human rights.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We have to ensure that we end these injustices once and for all.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So that every girl, everywhere around the world, like a girl in South Africa, able to live her dream, not faced with unemployment.<\/p>\n

For every boy in Somalia, able to attend school.<\/p>\n

For every future doctor in Haiti.<\/p>\n

Every would-be Nobel laureate.<\/p>\n

Every provider.<\/p>\n

Every dreamer.<\/p>\n

I thank you.<\/p>\n
