Your Excellency Bob Rae, Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations and former President of ECOSOC,<\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thank you for joining this morning\u2019s briefing on the report of the Economic and Social Council.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let me begin by commending Ambassador Rae and his team for their highly effective stewardship of ECOSOC throughout the Presidency.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their leadership has helped strengthen the Council\u2019s vital role as a bridge between global vision and local results.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Last week, at the Second World Social Summit in Doha, we underlined the reality that social development and equality are not a bonus \u2013 not charity \u2013 they are essential prerequisites to stability and prosperity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They are also very much in each of our own self-interest, as peace and security, and social development go hand-in-hand.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Time and again, we see the same chain reaction:<\/p>\n
