Dear\u00a0Excellency\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Lok Bahadur\u00a0Thapa, President of the Economic and Social Council,<\/div>\n
Ms. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations,<\/div>\n
Mr. Jaewon Choi, Executive Director of DMÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ,<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Excellencies,<\/div>\n
And especially\u00a0Youth leaders,<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
And I think we all have hardly seen this room as full and with positive energy\u00a0as today, so thank you for bringing\u00a0today not only the\u00a0sunshine\u00a0to this building but also your young spirit, the spirit of the future, yet as we heard also in the short movie, the phrase\u00a0 \u201cyoung\u00a0people are the\u00a0future”.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Honestly, it is not\u00a0only\u00a0a bit of a cliche, but\u00a0it’s\u00a0also a\u00a0way of postponing responsibility.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Because\u00a0you know better than us, young people\u00a0are obviously\u00a0already part of the present otherwise you would not be here, but also\u00a0because the\u00a0reality\u00a0that\u00a0young people are facing today\u00a0around the world\u00a0tells\u00a0a very different\u00a0story.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Nearly 244\u00a0million children and young people are\u00a0currently\u00a0out of school globally. In some regions, more than one in three are denied even the most basic access to education.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Almost one in five young people worldwide is not in employment, education, or training\u2014leaving their\u00a0development\u00a0and career progression at a standstill.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And more than one in six children are growing up in conflict\u2014where opportunity is not just limited, but\u00a0almost out\u00a0of reach.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So yes\u2014young people, you,\u00a0are\u00a0the\u00a0future, but right now, too many, especially young people who cannot\u00a0be\u00a0today\u00a0here with us in this room, are\u00a0even\u00a0being locked out of\u00a0the present, making their future almost\u00a0impossible.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And this is why this moment, this Youth Forum matters so much<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Because this Forum is not just a space for dialogue…it is a test of whether we are\u00a0truly\u00a0ready to act.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So, allow me to share three messages to the delegates, ministers, and young leaders here today.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
First,\u00a0to\u00a0delegates and Permanent Representatives in New York:\u00a0follow\u00a0through, no excuses.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
You have already made strong commitments to\u00a0meaningful youth participation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We have seen it in the Pact for the Future.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
At this session\u2019s first High-level Meeting on Youth\u00a0and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0thanking the\u00a0President\u00a0of\u00a0ECOSOC for his personal strong\u00a0commitment.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And\u00a0we have seen it\u00a0in the Core Principles for Meaningful Youth Participation, launched just\u00a0a\u00a0month\u00a0ago.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Now the question is whether those commitments will translate\u00a0into\u00a0efforts\u00a0that\u00a0truly recognize\u00a0youth as equal partners in global governance.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Because young people have been clear: symbolic participation is no longer sufficient….it is too little,\u00a0it is\u00a0too late.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We have the words. We have\u00a0the tools. We have\u00a0the momentum.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
What we need now is true implementation\u00a0and tangible change\u00a0because 2030 is not far away. We need to shape an inclusive and sustainable solutions roadmap\u00a0for\u00a0the 2030 Agenda.\u00a0We simply\u00a0cannot\u00a0fail.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Second,\u00a0to Ministers and representatives from capital: the discussions here must\u00a0move beyond this\u00a0chamber.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This Forum\u00a0provides\u00a0a critical opportunity to\u00a0hear\u00a0the ideas and solutions\u00a0of\u00a0youth\u00a0relating\u00a0to our\u00a0many global processes, from the\u00a0SDGs\u00a0to\u00a0the Pact for the Future to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Water Conference.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But\u00a0as important as listening is our ability to take\u00a0these\u00a0ideas home\u00a0to the national and\u00a0regional\u00a0context.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
To\u00a0build policies\u00a0with young\u00a0people,\u00a0and\u00a0not\u00a0only\u00a0for\u00a0young people.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Because we\u00a0will not deliver on the\u00a02030 Agenda without them.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This means creating space for young people to lead in your own countries\u2014and I started\u00a0as a young MP in\u00a0Parliament and you could not imagine how often\u00a0I\u00a0heard,\u00a0\u201cWell,\u00a0are you the intern?\u201d\u00a0and when I got\u00a0to have\u00a0two little children, so, \u201cwho is caring for your daughters at this moment?\u201d so yes\u00a0unfortunately, especially the women in the room, we have been through it all, but we\u00a0cannot\u00a0step back \u2014 and this is the responsibility of every Government to underline and make clear, you\u00a0cannot\u00a0be young enough to enter politics and engage in your own present and future.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And\u00a0this\u00a0means\u00a0collaboration across generations\u2014bringing together experience and new thinking to meet today\u2019s challenges.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Investing in\u00a0young people\u00a0cannot remain empty words and unkept promises.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Again,\u00a0I know\u00a0it\u00a0from my own country,\u00a0and I guess it is the same\u00a0in many places in the world,\u00a0that\u00a0during an election\u00a0campaign, every politician is campaigning for\u00a0the\u00a0best\u00a0education.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I mean if you write on your campaign\u00a0poster “I\u00a0don’t\u00a0want to have good schools, but bad schools”, you\u00a0probably\u00a0won’t\u00a0win any election.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But we have also seen it afterwards when it comes to prioritizing budgets and budgets are\u00a0short at these times everywhere around the world. You have\u00a0very strong\u00a0lobby groups on different matters, unfortunately, then the voice of the youth is not heard.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And there’s data from Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO which is unfortunately quite clear\u00a0which\u00a0estimates\u00a0that one in three countries\u00a0has\u00a0not met\u00a0its\u00a0benchmarks for education expenditure under SDG\u00a04\u00a0and\u00a0this counts to all countries around the world from the global south to the global north.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This underinvestment does not only\u00a0fail\u00a0young people\u2014it holds back our economies, our societies, and our\u00a0common\u00a0shared future.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And last, but certainly not least,\u00a0to the young people, to the young leaders, to you here today:\u00a0please\u00a0keep pushing boundaries. Keep questioning. Keep\u00a0leading.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
You are already driving change\u2014through your innovation, your advocacy, and your courage to challenge the status quo.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I was at an event called the\u00a0Moonshot Awards where people who were representing their developing technologies to deliver, at teenager\u00a0age, clean\u00a0water, detect crop disease, and diagnose malaria\u2014ideas that are already improving lives and creating a better future for all,\u00a0but investment is lacking.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So,\u00a0my plea to the young people here today is to take full advantage of this opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0share your ideas\u00a0with policymakers.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u2026and most importantly:\u00a0be yourself.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Let nobody tell you that you\u00a0have to\u00a0dress like diplomats in a dark suit or speak like a diplomat to be taken seriously.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Because we need your voices precisely\u00a0because\u00a0<\/i>you\u00a0are uniquely\u00a0you<\/u>\u2014because you look, act,\u00a0and\u00a0speak\u00a0with\u00a0a young,\u00a0fresh,\u00a0and\u00a0future\u00a0perspective.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
You challenge our assumptions, and you expand what we believe is possible.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Because all innovations start with someone calling you\u00a0naive or even crazy.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So,\u00a0keep imagining what others cannot yet see\u2014and keep pushing us to do better, Better Together.<\/div>\n
