Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Distinguished delegates,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I welcome the timely adoption of the Security Council\u2019s annual report and its submission to the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I thank the Permanent Mission of Pakistan, as the Council member responsible for preparing this year\u2019s report, for its cooperation and engagement throughout this process.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As Pakistan stressed at the Security Council\u2019s adoption of the report on 22 May, this process remains a vital instrument for transparency, accountability and institutional dialogue between the Council and the wider United Nations membership.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The presentation of the report to the General Assembly reflects the continuing commitment of Member States to strengthening cooperation between the two organs and to formalizing successful practices developed over previous years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It also provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on the Council\u2019s activities, emerging trends and the nature of the matters before it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At a time when trust in multilateralism is under strain, this exchange underscores the importance of restoring wider confidence in our collective work.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It responds to Member State calls for stronger cooperation between the General Assembly and the Security Council, and for greater coherence and complementarity between the two organs in addressing global challenges.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An objective reflected in resolution 79\/327 on the revitalisation of the work of the General Assembly, which recognises the importance of a Security Council that is more transparent, accountable, inclusive and responsive to the wider membership.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This cooperation is not an abstraction. It is practical, concrete and urgent.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And it takes on particular importance as the United Nations prepares to select and appoint the next Secretary General.<\/p>\n

In that regard, and in my capacity as President of the General Assembly, I have worked closely with the presidencies of the Security Council to support a process that is transparent, inclusive, structured, timely and credible.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This has included issuing letters regarding the selection and appointment process, in line with the expectations of Member States and the continuing work on General Assembly revitalisation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I have also written to the Security Council to underline the importance of ensuring that its deliberations on candidates are conducted in a manner that reflects the principles of transparency and inclusivity expected by the wider membership.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This engagement reflects my strong belief that close coordination between the General Assembly and the Security Council is essential to the credibility of the process.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That same spirit of cooperation is also essential to peacebuilding.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The General Assembly and the Security Council are co-parents of the Peacebuilding Commission, a unique intergovernmental advisory body that supports both organs, as well as the Economic and Social Council, on peacebuilding and sustaining peace.<\/p>\n

In November 2025, the General Assembly and the Security Council adopted parallel resolutions on the 2025 review of the peacebuilding architecture.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their implementation offers an important opportunity to strengthen the Commission\u2019s bridging role and support more coherent efforts across the United Nations system.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cooperation around peacebuilding can also serve as a blueprint for stronger engagement between the General Assembly and the Security Council on broader peace and security challenges<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For in today\u2019s fragmented and fast-moving political environment, peace and security challenges are increasingly interconnected, cutting across regions, sectors and mandates, thus demanding a holistic approach.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In this context, greater clarity on the Council\u2019s work, dynamics, positions and possible options is critical, once again underscoring the importance of this report.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It allows the General Assembly to follow developments more closely, engage more meaningfully and contribute more effectively to collective efforts to uphold multilateralism and a peaceful international order.<\/p>\n

Or, in the words of the Charter, to \u201cunite our strength to maintain international peace and security.\u201d<\/p>\n
