I am delighted to greet all the participants of the International Conference on Combating Sand and Dust Storms.
I am grateful to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran for hosting this important Conference in partnership with the United Nations organizations, including ESCAP, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵEP, WMO, and my own Department.
Sand and Dust storms pose a daunting challenge to fighting climate change and achieving sustainable development.
The adverse impacts on health, agriculture, land, livelihoods and the well-being of societies can impede progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and sustainable development goals.
Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system is ready to work with Member States and stakeholders in meeting this challenge.
In this regard, I commend the Islamic Republic of Iran for its initiatives and contributions toward building resilience and increasing adaptive capacities in affected developing countries.
I am confident that the Tehran Conference will provide a good opportunity to tackle the root causes of Sand and Dust Storms and share practical solutions.
I wish you fruitful discussions and a successful outcome.
