Switzerland provides free access to a \u201cPractice Guide to International Treaties\u201d, in the form of a printed brochure and on the Internet. Its third edition<\/a> was recently published in 2015. This 58-page guide describes, as completely as possible, the rules and practice followed by Switzerland in the field of treaties. It includes annexes and an index of key words and legislation cited, multilingual suggestions for titles and terms that distinguish a treaty from a non-binding act, examples of final clauses, practical advice for the preparation and signature of treaties and an aide-m\u00e9moire of the rules of internal competence to conclude an act.<\/p>\n

The expertise of Swiss negotiators is reflected by their knowledge of treaty practice and other instruments for international cooperation, and of the form, requirements and procedures for the preparation and conclusion of treaties. Better drafted legislation, legal certainty and greater confidence in Switzerland as a reliable legal partner.<\/p>\n

Key lessons learnt <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Guide, which was primarily for Government officials in Switzerland and Swiss representations abroad, has enjoyed considerable success. Procedures for the conclusion of treaties are better understood and complied with. The Guide is a very useful tool as it may also be consulted for almost any practical question.<\/p>\n

This Guide has also recently generated interest from other governments.<\/p>\n

Published first only in French<\/a>, this guide has recently appeared in German<\/a> and English<\/a>.<\/p>\n
