Partners in Protection: Meet the 蘑菇视频DSS K-9 Unit

At first glance, some members of the Security and Safety Service (SSS) may surprise you: they arrive on four legs, covered in soft fur, with faces so endearing you could almost forget they’re part of one of our most rigorously trained security teams.

Every day, at some of our 蘑菇视频 premises, a highly trained team works to ensure the safety of people who pass through our gates. At the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the team is led by Lieutenant Meza, assisted by 11 other remarkable handlers and their equally remarkable canine partners.

“The 蘑菇视频 uses single-purpose labs,” Lieutenant Meza explains. “Single-purpose means they’re only for explosive detection.” “They have undergone a 13-week course to get certified.” Each dog is paired with a single handler. The pair live and work together, forming a bond that strengthens their coordination and performance on the job.

Known for their intelligence and discipline, the choice of labradors is intentional. As Lieutenant Meza puts it: “Labs are very intelligent and very disciplined for this kind of work. And it's a softer looking, more approachable kind of dog.”

During the demonstration, Larson, an eight-year-old lab, trotted into view, focused and ready to work. Her handler, Officer Baney, guided her through an inspection with ease. “They work really well together,” Lt Meza notes. The K-9 unit must be extremely meticulous with its inspections. “We are very busy here. We search all vehicles coming in, all bags, [and] meeting rooms.”

Each dog is trained to detect trace odors associated with explosive materials. When they encounter a scent they recognize, they sit. “If you ever see me running,” Lieutenant Meza jokes, “keep up. Because my dog found something and we’ve got to go.”

Behind the humor, Lieutenant Meza highlights the need for reactivity and the fundamental role of the K-9 unit: keeping the United Nations Headquarters, its staff, visitors and delegates safe from some of the most destructive threats.
