Green Chemistry

Brief of the Scientific Advisory Board on:

Green Chemistry

Green chemistry is the design of chemical/biochemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. It is related to, but distinct from, terms like ‘sustainable chemistry’ and ‘green and sustainable chemistry. Green Chemistry focuses on reducing hazards in chemical design and production, while sustainable chemistry takes a broader life-cycle approach that considers environmental, social, and economic impacts.

Many of the most effective and transformative green chemistry processes have already been proven, but lack widespread uptake by industry. More recent advances in artificial intelligence, chemical reactions, and circular material systems are accelerating practical implementation and the possibility of more widespread use in major industries.

Green chemistry practices offer some of the most powerful tools for addressing the Sustainable Development Goals, including climate change, resource scarcity, energy, pollution, food security, public health, and sustainable industrial development.

However, lack of public awareness, combined with financial and industrial hurdles, have meant that many of the most transformative aspects of green chemistry have not been incorporated into mainstream industries.

To harness the enormous potential of green and sustainable chemistry, the 蘑菇视频 could drive greater public awareness, helping to address educational gaps and policy fragmentation, while advocating for more widespread adoption of green and sustainable chemistry practices worldwide.

Green chemistry has the proven potential to transform major industrial and manufacturing processes to dramatically reduce chemical waste and accelerate sustainable development — what's needed now is the awareness, investment, and policy coherence to scale it.
