SDG Advocate Co-Chairs President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway published an op-ed in HuffPost calling for accelerated action to implement the SDGs.
The Co-Chairs write that “the SDGs are the boldest and loudest articulation of a collective transformational agenda and development ambition the world has ever seen.”
Stressing the universality and interdependence of the Goals, they say that “in today’s heavily inter-dependent and interconnected world, a successful SDGs campaign and effective implementation of the goals must be seen as a global public good.”
President Akufo-Addo and Prime Minister Solberg also argue that the SDGs are an effective for of prevention and addressing the root causes of global issues. “Take migration and terrorism as examples. These are very different and complex challenges, and they have their roots in the toxic cocktail of deprivation and under-development. Both challenges can be addressed by working together to achieve the SDGs.”
Saying that the SDGs arrive at a time of “increased uncertainty” but also “great hope,” the Co-Chairs call on governments, civil society, and regular citizens to do their part to accelerate action to achieve the SDGs by 2030.
