NEW YORK, 11 August\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Development Programme (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP) and partners have announced the winners<\/a> of the 13th Equator Prize, recognizing ten indigenous peoples and local communities from nine countries.<\/p>\n

The winners<\/a>, selected from a pool of over 500 nominations from 109 countries hail from Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Gabon, Ghana, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Mozambique and Argentina. The announcement also marks the\u00a0Equator Initiative\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0twentieth anniversary.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s winners highlight the theme of the\u00a0International Day of the World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples<\/a>: \u201cThe Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n

The winning organizations demonstrate the ways that innovative, nature-based solutions can enable communities to achieve, even in a time of economic, environmental, political and public health shocks.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor 20 years, Equator Prize winners have shown that local communities are already putting into place the economic and development transformations we need, to achieve a nature-positive future for all,\u201d said Francine Pickup, Deputy Director of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support. \u201cNow more than ever, it is time to emulate their leadership and support their efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The important role of indigenous peoples in achieving sustainable development is recognized in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including Goal 2<\/a> (zero hunger), Goal 4<\/a> (quality education) and Goal 16<\/a> (peace, justice and strong institutions).<\/p>\n
