NEW YORK, 14 October \u2013 <\/strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and partners are gearing up for next year\u2019s international conference on water \u2013 a critical resource that sustains life on the planet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot imagine an issue that is more serious and more urgent than water \u2013 including the issue of groundwater,\u201d said Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/a>, President of the 77th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly. \u201cSimply said, our immediate and long-term future depend on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was speaking<\/a> at an event, titled \u201cValuing the Invisible \u2013 Transboundary Groundwater Resources Cooperation\u201d. Describing water as \u201cour number one resource\u201d, the Assembly President stressed the need for better cooperation in protecting and sharing it.<\/p>\n

Mr. K\u0151r\u00f6si, whose motto is \u201csolutions through solidarity, sustainability and science\u201d, emphasized that his aim is to bring conversations about groundwater out of the circles of scientists and experts because it is a vital question of life and death for many, and also a vital question for the economy, food production, the industry, human settlements, and biodiversity.<\/p>\n

The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ 2023 Water Conference, to be held in New York, from 22 to 24 March, is seen as the most important water event in a generation and will examine water-linked issues from various angles. The last Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ conference on water was held in 1977 in Mar del Plata, Argentina.<\/p>\n

As part of preparations, the Assembly President will convene various stakeholders on 24 October for consultations<\/a> to identify \u201cgame changers\u201d that can help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6<\/a> (clean water and sanitation) and bring about transformative actions that go beyond the good practices and lessoned learned.<\/p>\n

The stakeholders\u2019 inputs will inform a day-long high-level preparatory meeting on 25 October<\/a>, in which the themes of interactive dialogues of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ 2023 Water Conference will be finalized.<\/p>\n
