18 November, NEW YORK \u2013 Ahead of the World Toilet Day<\/a> on 19 November, the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF) launched a new game plan to help governments achieve safely managed sanitation for their populations and meet the sanitation target of the Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (SDGs).<\/p>\n

\u201cSDG 6.2<\/a> is about ending open defecation and providing access to safe sanitation and hygiene, and it is the furthest off-track of all the SDGs, and furthest in terms of underfunding,\u201d said Ann Thomas, Team Leader, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH\u202fProgramme Division, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF, at a Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters press conference on Thursday.<\/p>\n

In a 2020 estimate, 3.6 billion people lacked safely managed sanitation services. The rate of sanitation coverage increase would need to quadruple to achieve universal access to safely managed services by 2030, Ms. Thomas said, describing the situation \u201ca sanitation crisis\u201d, especially for women and children.<\/p>\n

Through the Game Plan to Reach Safety Managed Sanitation 2022-2030<\/a>, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF will support 1 billion people gain access to safely managed sanitation, through direct and indirect support, in collaboration with partners.<\/p>\n

Also speaking at the press conference, Johannes Cullmann, Vice Chair of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Water<\/a>, the world body\u2019s inter-agency coordination mechanism for water issues, described poor sanitation as \u201cnot a technological problem but a \u2018political will\u2019 problem\u201d, stressing that technologies exist, and Governments must invest in sanitation.<\/p>\n

Mr. Cullmann said World Toilet Day\u2019s theme is tied to the World Water Day theme \u201cGroundwater: making the invisible, visible\u201d.<\/p>\n

The whole discussion on sanitation has been a \u201ctaboo\u201d and \u201cinvisible\u201d, both speakers pointed out, emphasizing the need to make it more prominent with politicians to ensure everyone has access to proper sanitation.<\/p>\n

These topics will be discussed at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Water Summit on Groundwater<\/a> in Paris from 7 to 8 December, and at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ 2023 Water Conference<\/a> from 22 to 24 March.<\/p>\n

On 18 November, a giant inflatable toilet will be displayed on the front lawn of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters during the day. The inflatable toilet, which was last seen in 2019, aims to draw attention to the state of sanitation.<\/p>\n

On the same day, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF will convene an event, titled \u201cAccelerating Sanitation Towards 2030<\/a>\u201d with speakers to discuss key sanitation and water issues in light of the upcoming Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ 2023 Water Conference.<\/p>\n
