a lifeline for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/\">sustainable development<\/a> but also a potential source of disputes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 3\u202fbillion people depend on water that crosses national borders,\u201d said Olga Algayerova, Executive Secretary of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Economic Commission for Europe (Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµECE) at the coalition\u2019s launch during <a href=\"https:\/\/groundwater-summit.org\/\">the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ-Water Summit on Groundwater<\/a> held at the Headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµESCO) in Paris.\u202f \u201cThis makes transboundary water cooperation a crucial foundation for peace, sustainable development and climate action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/unece.org\/climate-change\/press\/coalition-launches-strengthen-commitment-transboundary-water-cooperation\">Transboundary Water Cooperation Coalition<\/a> \u2013 a partnership of Governments, intergovernmental organizations, regional integration organizations, international financial institutions, academic institutions and civil society organizations \u2013 will work to highlight the critical importance of cooperating over shared water resources for water security and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>While water stress is on the rise, only 24 of 153 countries that share transboundary river, lake or aquifer basins have all their transboundary basins covered by operational arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImproved cooperation over shared water resources is a prerequisite for development and the advancement of climate change agenda and the demands of growing population, balancing the needs of people and the environment,\u201d said Saroj Kumar Jha, Global Director for the World Bank Group\u2019s Water Global Practice, expressing the institution\u2019s commitment to an increased focus on cooperation around transboundary water management that will help advance peace, stability and build climate resilience.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day <a href=\"https:\/\/groundwater-summit.org\/\">Groundwater Summit,<\/a> which concluded today, sets the stage for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/conferences\/water2023\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Water Conference <\/a>to take place on 22\u201324 March 2023 in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition will encourage countries and organizations from around the world to submit concrete commitments to advance transboundary water cooperation as contributions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/partnerships\/action-networks\/water\">Water Action Agenda<\/a>, an anticipated main outcome of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/conferences\/water2023\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ 2023 Water Conference.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>8 December \u2013 Governments, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ entities and other organizations launched  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":363,"featured_media":107536,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[7511,14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-107535","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-water-and-sanitation"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/107535","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/363"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=107535"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/107535\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/107536"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=107535"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=107535"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=107535"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
