  {"id":12041,"date":"2015-11-09T20:03:13","date_gmt":"2015-11-09T20:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=12041"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:03:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:03:33","slug":"wmo-atmospheric-greenhouse-gases-reach-record-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/11\/wmo-atmospheric-greenhouse-gases-reach-record-high\/","title":{"rendered":"WMO: Atmospheric greenhouse gases reach record high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced today that the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached yet another new record high in 2014, continuing aWMO: Atmospheric greenhouse gases reach record high relentless rise which is fuelling climate change and will make the planet more dangerous and inhospitable for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery year we report a new record in greenhouse gas concentrations,\u201d said WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmo.int\/media\/content\/greenhouse-gas-concentrations-hit-yet-another-record\">press release<\/a>. \u201cEvery year we say that time is running out. We have to act now to slash greenhouse gas emissions if we are to have a chance to keep the increase in temperatures to manageable levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WMO\u2019s Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, released ahead of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cop21.gouv.fr\/fr\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ climate conference<\/a> this December in Paris, says that between 1990 and 2014 there was a 36 per cent increase in radiative forcing \u2013 the warming effect on our climate \u2013 because of long-lived greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from industrial, agricultural and domestic activities.<\/p>\n<p>The report also highlights the interaction and amplification effect between rising levels of CO2 and water vapour, which is itself a major greenhouse gas, albeit short-lived. Warmer air holds more moisture and so increased surface temperatures caused by CO2 would lead to a rise in global water vapour levels, further adding to the enhanced greenhouse effect. WMO notes that further increases in CO2 concentrations will lead to disproportionately high increases in thermal energy and warming from water vapour.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the study shows that atmospheric concentrations of CO2 \u2013 the most important long-lived greenhouse gas \u2013 reached 397.7 parts per million (ppm) in 2014. In the Northern hemisphere CO2 concentrations crossed the symbolically significant 400 ppm level in 2014 spring, when CO2 is most abundant. In spring 2015, the global average concentration of CO2 crossed the 400 ppm barrier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will soon be living with globally averaged CO2 levels above 400 parts per million as a permanent reality,\u201d Mr. Jarraud continued. \u201cWe can\u2019t see CO2. It is an invisible threat, but a very real one. It means hotter global temperatures, more extreme weather events like heatwaves and floods, melting ice, rising sea levels and increased acidity of the oceans. This is happening now and we are moving into unchartered territory at a frightening speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcess energy trapped by CO2 and other greenhouse gases is heating up the Earth surface which leads to increase in atmospheric water vapour which in turn is generating <div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[and] trapping even more heat,\u201d he added, underlining that carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for hundreds of years and in the ocean for even longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPast, present and future emissions will have a cumulative impact on both global warming and ocean acidification. The laws of physics are non-negotiable,\u201d Mr. Jarraud warned.<\/p>\n<p>The WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin reports on atmospheric concentrations \u2013 and not emissions \u2013 of greenhouse gases. Emissions represent what goes into the atmosphere while concentrations represent what remains in the atmosphere after the complex system of interactions between the atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere and the oceans.
