  {"id":16569,"date":"2016-04-21T16:11:19","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T16:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=16569"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:00:41","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:00:41","slug":"with-global-goals-agreed-un-focuses-on-what-it-will-take-to-achieve-sustainability-targets-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2016\/04\/with-global-goals-agreed-un-focuses-on-what-it-will-take-to-achieve-sustainability-targets-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"With Global Goals agreed, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ focuses on what it will take to achieve sustainability targets by 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a watershed moment for international cooperation, global political, business and civil society leaders are headed to New York where they will pledge fast action on the new United Nations sustainable development agenda and the landmark Paris climate agreement, to build on momentum from 2015 to create a better future for people and the planet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div id=\"story-content\" class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"span8\">\n<div id=\"fullstory\">\n<p>\u201cFrom a historical perspective, this will be a great day for the United Nations,\u201d Selwin Hart, the Director of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Secretary-General\u2019s Climate Change Support Team, recently said in reference to this coming Friday, when leaders from more than 160 countries are expected at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Headquarters to sign the <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.unfccc.int\/unfccc-newsroom\/finale-cop21\/\">Paris Agreement<\/a>, adopted last December at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ climate change conference (<a href=\"\/sustainabledevelopment\/cop21\/\">COP21<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The event is being preceded on Thursday by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/70\/events\/sdgs\/\">High Level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>), a set of 17 global goals to wipe out poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change over the next 15 years. These are the basis of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/post2015\/transformingourworld\">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>, adopted by Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Member States last September.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a <a href=\"http:\/\/webtv.un.org\/watch\/selwin-hart-director-of-climate-change-support-team-and-david-nabarro-special-adviser-on-the-2030-agenda-for-sustainable-development-and-climate-change-press-conference\/485262240100\">press conference<\/a> on Tuesday, David Nabarro, the Secretary-General&#8217;s Special Adviser on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change, told reporters that the signing of the Paris Agreement is crucial because achieving progress in relation to climate change is central to the broader effort of achieving the SDGs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost people who looked at the global situation say that if we don\u2019t succeed in maintaining the world under a 2 degrees Celsius rise, then it\u2019s going to be incredibly difficult to realize the Sustainable Development Goals,\u201d he warned. \u201cAnd so implementing the Paris agreement is important for promoting prosperity, improving people\u2019s wellbeing, and protecting the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The universal agreement\u2019s main aim is to keep a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement will enter into force 30 days after at least 55 countries, accounting for 55 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, deposit their instruments of ratification or acceptance with the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div id=\"story-content\" class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"span8\">\n<div id=\"fullstory\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div id=\"story-content\" class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"span8\">\n<div id=\"fullstory\">\n<p>Also speaking at the press conference, Selwin Hart announced that approximately ten countries, mostly Small Island Developing States, will both sign and ratify the document. Turning to key greenhouse gas emitters, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ official said China and India intend to ratify it in 2016, an announcement recently made in a joint presidential statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo <div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[we are] gathering momentum for an early entrance into force of the Agreement,\u201d he underlined, noting that generating this momentum is one the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ chief\u2019s key objective at the event, followed by wanting to demonstrate that all segments and sectors of society and the \u201creal economy\u201d are mobilizing in support of ambitious action.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµFCCC) \u2013 the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ entity leading climate negotiations \u2013 today <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.unfccc.int\/paris-agreement\/paris-signing-marks-critical-next-step-to-sustainable-future-1\/\">highlighted<\/a> the record number of countries set to sign the Agreement, calling it \u201ca critical juncture in a global effort to ensure lasting hopes for secure and peaceful, human development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore carbon in the atmosphere equals more poverty,\u201d said Christiana Figueres, the Executive Secretary of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµFCCC. \u201cWe cannot deliver sustainable development without tackling climate change, and we cannot tackle climate change without addressing the root causes of poverty, inequality and unsustainable development patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ records, the largest ever number of countries to sign an international agreement in one day was in 1982, when 119 countries signed the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Convention on the Law of the Sea.
