  {"id":17250,"date":"2016-05-09T19:17:22","date_gmt":"2016-05-09T19:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=17250"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:00:13","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:00:13","slug":"un-forum-on-indigenous-issues-opens-2016-session-with-focus-on-conflict-peace-and-resolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2016\/05\/un-forum-on-indigenous-issues-opens-2016-session-with-focus-on-conflict-peace-and-resolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Forum on indigenous issues opens 2016 session with focus on conflict, peace and resolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>United Nations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\">Secretary-General<\/a> Ban Ki-moon today announced the launch of a plan to realize the full rights of indigenous peoples who are increasingly being drawn into conflicts over their lands and resources.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div id=\"story-content\" class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"span8\">\n<div id=\"fullstory\">\n<p>\u201cI am pleased to send greetings to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues,\u201d Mr. Ban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/statements\/index.asp?nid=9686\">said<\/a> via video message at the opening of the forum&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/indigenouspeoples\/unpfii-sessions-2\/unpfii-fifteenth-session.html\">15th session<\/a>, held in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ General Assembly Hall in New York. \u201cI welcome your focus on conflict, peace and resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 indigenous participants from all regions of the world are expected to attend the annual two-week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/indigenouspeoples\/unpfii-sessions-2.html\">Forum<\/a>, this year held from 9 to 20 May. The issues of peace and conflict, often relating to indigenous peoples&#8217; lands, territories and resources, and to their rights and distinct identities, will be at the forefront of this year&#8217;s discussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLasting peace requires that indigenous peoples have access to cultural, social and economic justice,\u201d the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ chief highlighted. \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ga\/69\/meetings\/indigenous\/#&amp;panel1-1\">2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples<\/a> called on the United Nations to ensure a coherent approach.
