  {"id":20612,"date":"2016-09-26T13:56:09","date_gmt":"2016-09-26T13:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=20612"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:57:13","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:57:13","slug":"world-leaders-spotlight-2030-agenda-climate-action-at-un-general-assemblys-annual-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2016\/09\/world-leaders-spotlight-2030-agenda-climate-action-at-un-general-assemblys-annual-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"World leaders spotlight 2030 Agenda, climate action at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ General Assembly\u2019s annual debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>26 September 2016 \u2013 Speaking on behalf of Peter Thomson, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, one of the 193-member body\u2019s Vice-Presidents, Durga Prasad Bhattarai, Ambassador of Nepal, said he was encouraged by the fact that many Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Member States have already embedded the Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>) into their national plans and policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe began with a moving SDG moment, which reminded us of how transformative the SDGs will be and how urgently action is now required to implement them,\u201d he said in<a href=\"https:\/\/gadebate.un.org\/en\/71\/president-general-assembly-closing\">closing remarks<\/a> at the closing of the Assembly\u2019s annual general debate, the forum where world leaders gather to present their policies the theme of the session \u2013 which this year is SDG implementation \u00ac \u2013as well as other critical global issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaders recalled and reaffirmed the spirit and the principles of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Charter and confirmed their faith in the central role of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ in international cooperation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He also welcomed the important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=55011\">discussions<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=54928\">antimicrobial resistance<\/a>, a phenomenon that threatens millions of lives around the world as well as progress across the SDGs.<\/p>\n<p>He also welcomed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=54997\">increased momentum<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/paris_agreement\/items\/9444.php\">ratification<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.unfccc.int\/unfccc-newsroom\/finale-cop21\/\">Paris Agreement<\/a> on climate change and noted that ratifications covering only a further 7.5 per cent of global emissions to see the Agreement enter into force.<\/p>\n<p>Also welcoming the adoption of the New York Declaration at last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/refugeesmigrants.un.org\/summit\">Summit for Refugees and Migrants<\/a>, he said that high-level event initiated a process that the General Assembly President will take forward during this session, with a view to adopting two global compacts, respectively, on migrants and on refugees, in 2018.<\/p>\n<div class=\"carousel-inner\">\n<div class=\"item\"><a class=\"lightbox\" title=\"Durga Prasad Bhattarai of Nepal, Acting President of the General Assembly, chairs the closing meeting of the Assembly\u2019s seventy-first annual general debate. Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Photo\/Cia Pak<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Turning to the complex and critical humanitarian crises in different parts of the world, said: \u201cI <div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[join] the Secretary General and Member States in condemning the unacceptable attacks on a Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ aid convoy in Aleppo and in calling for a renewed effort from global and regional powers to find a peaceful political solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted the reform of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Security Council, raised by many Member States as important to posture the global organization to address new challenges across the world, and said that the emphasis placed by world leaders on the protection and promotion of human rights is very important.<\/p>\n<p>Further in his remarks, the Acting President expressed that the engagement of world leaders demonstrated, once again, the unique nature of the General Debate and added that it was \u201cthe embodiment of the equality of nations and provides Member States with an opportunity to advance our collective pursuit of solutions to global challenges through dialogue and cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, he also expressed appreciation to the valuable leadership of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\">Secretary-General<\/a> Ban Ki-moon during his term and said: \u201cHis statement [opening the debate] was a testimony both to the work he has done these past nine years and the scale of the challenges his successor will face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson also reviewed several of the key themes that emerged over the session, which began Monday, 19 September. He welcomed the many statements of solidarity with<a href=\"http:\/\/refugeesmigrants.un.org\/\">refugees and migrants<\/a> and was heartened by efforts to mobilize against xenophobia. He recalled the concerns of many Member States for the need to support countries of origin, transit and destination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe New York Declaration has given a new structure to work regarding refugees and migrants,\u201d he said, expressing the hope that the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ would send a signal of everyone\u2019s equal value. The conflict in Syria was high on the agenda of many States, and it was clear that more needed be done to stop fighting and provide humanitarian assistance.
