  {"id":22355,"date":"2016-11-09T21:32:35","date_gmt":"2016-11-09T21:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=22355"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:56:05","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:56:05","slug":"pga-outlines-strategy-for-stepped-up-sdgs-implementation-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2016\/11\/pga-outlines-strategy-for-stepped-up-sdgs-implementation-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"PGA outlines strategy for stepped-up SDGs implementation plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>General Assembly President Peter Thomson briefed United Nations Member States on the implementation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/2016\/11\/08\/sdg-implementation-strategy\/\">strategy<\/a> for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>), the transformative 17-point framework for ensuring peace and prosperity for all on a healthy planet.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/2016\/11\/08\/sdg-implementation-strategy-briefing-of-member-states-by-the-president-of-the-general-assembly\/\">spoke of<\/a> transforming our world by eradicating poverty and generating collective prosperity, addressing inequalities \u2013 particularly with regards to gender and the advancement of rights for women and girls, creating a safer and more just world, and combatting climate change and protecting the natural environment.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/post2015\/transformingourworld\">2030 Agenda<\/a> \u201cwas grounded,\u201d he said, \u201cin the principle of \u2018leaving no-one behind,\u2019 ensuring human rights for all, and engaging young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Thomson, briefing Member States informally, reaffirmed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=54215\">commitment he made<\/a> when he took the Oath of Office in June of this year, which he says is \u201crooted in my deep belief that only through the attainment of sustainable development will sustainable peace and human rights be realized for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in turn,\u201d he added, \u201csustainable development will only be achieved by sustaining peace and the full realization of human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Thomson announced that in order to motivate actors at global, regional, national, and community levels, he had appointed an SDG implementation team, to be led by Special Adviser Ambassador Dessima Williams along with experts from the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Secretariat and secondees from the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Development Programme (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.undp.org\/\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµDP<\/a>), World Bank Group, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Population Fund (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/public\/home\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµFPA<\/a>), the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Children\u2019s Fund (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµICEF<\/a>), and Member States. Ambassador Macharia Kamau will serve as the Special Envoy on SDP Implementation and Climate Change.<\/p>\n<p>The team will focus on three key tracks:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Raising the global public\u2019s awareness of the importance of SDG implementation;<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening momentum in the implementation of each of the 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li>Supporting the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ and related agencies in making their maximum contribution to SDG implementation at all levels.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly acknowledged that while responsibility for implementing the SDGs lies primarily with Governments, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ has a central support role in order to see that the Goals are put into action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of that role,\u201d he explained, \u201cis to activate and align all relevant partners in the universal and integrated pursuit of the SDGs \u2013 international financial institutions, multilateral bodies, regulatory authorities, the private sector, philanthropic foundations, civil society, women\u2019s organizations, academia, local authorities, and people everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDedicated workshops, meetings and events, at both expert and high levels, will be organized throughout the session,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In order to ensure that the first track \u2013 which seeks to raise awareness \u2013 is met, Mr. Thomson and his team advocate including the SDGs in school curricula around the world, maximizing online communication, working with young advocates, and promoting high-level advocacy through events and workshops in order to engage the public and attract new stakeholders to the movement.<\/p>\n<p>The second track aims to strengthen the momentum of implementing each goal, for which Mr. Thomson outlined specific objectives and strategies to accompany each of the 17 goals. For example, he spoke of collaborating with the private sector, organizing new meetings, promoting new technologies, securing commitments from new actors, convening leading thinkers and academics, promoting local leader participation in international agenda-setting, and more.<\/p>\n<p>The second track will focus efforts in the six specific following areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Aligning increased private investments and capital flows with the SDGs, including through \u201cgreening\u201d the financial system and its regulatory mechanisms;<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening domestic resource mobilization capacity;<\/li>\n<li>Convening a joint meeting with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on global economic governance;<\/li>\n<li>Mobilizing young innovators including on the margins of the ECOSOC Forum on Science Technology and innovation;<\/li>\n<li>Fostering further work on South-South and Triangular cooperation, and;<\/li>\n<li>Collaborating with partners in the margins of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Statistical Commission on how concrete and targeted assistance can help countries improve their data-systems and overall capacity in this area.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Finally, track three, supporting the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ and its agencies in order to ensure a maximum contribution to the SDGs at all levels, will be achieved by convening regular briefings with the new Secretary-General, Member States, and the members of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Chief Executive Board as well as maximizing the role of the General Assembly in SDG implementation and strengthening the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ\u2019s engagement with civil society, the private sector, and other important stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hold myself accountable to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/2016\/11\/08\/sdg-implementation-strategy\/\">Strategic Plan<\/a>,\u201d said Mr. Thomson, who will report on the progress in July 2017.<\/p>\n<p>To the General Assembly, he said, \u201cI welcome cooperation, partnership, and positive input towards the fulfilment of this Strategic Plan, by and from all those who believe in the need for real momentum to be achieved for the Sustainable Development Goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA universal effort is required if our world is indeed to be transformed towards a sustainable future for human kind,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=55507#.WCOSjC0rLcs\" target=\"_blank\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ News Centre<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Thomson announced that in order to motivate actors at global, regional, national, and community levels, he has appointed an SDG implementation team.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":230,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[4,29],"tags":[2051,6344,6341,5009],"class_list":["post-22355","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","category-sustainable-development-agenda","tag-2030-agenda","tag-implementation","tag-peter-thomson","tag-pga"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22355","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/230"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=22355"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22355\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=22355"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=22355"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=22355"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
