  {"id":22387,"date":"2016-11-10T17:39:32","date_gmt":"2016-11-10T17:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=22387"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:56:04","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:56:04","slug":"unesco-science-museums-vitally-important-for-sustainable-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2016\/11\/unesco-science-museums-vitally-important-for-sustainable-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµESCO: Science museums vitally important for sustainable development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Noting the centrality of science in major global sustainable development agenda, the head of the United Nations educational and scientific agency underscored the importance of science centres and museums to build skill and capacities as well as to send strong messages about the importance of science for sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/post2015\/transformingourworld\">2030 Agenda<\/a> for Sustainable Development, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/ffd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AAAA_Outcome.pdf\">Addis Ababa Action Agenda<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preventionweb.net\/files\/43291_sendaiframeworkfordrren.pdf\">Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.unfccc.int\/unfccc-newsroom\/finale-cop21\/\">Paris Agreement<\/a> on climate change, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/unesco\/\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµESCO<\/a>) Director-General Irina Bokova said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese agreements embody a new vision for prosperity, peace and the planet, to allow every society to create and share knowledge, to nurture every source of innovation and creativity, <div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[and] to craft a more inclusive, sustainable and just path to the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking this forward calls for an ever greater expansion of science and for tighter linkages between science and society,\u201d she added in her message on the occasion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/scienceday\/week.shtml\">World Science Day for Peace and Development<\/a>, celebrated annually on 10 November.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the Day is dedicated to the theme <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/unesco\/events\/prizes-and-celebrations\/celebrations\/international-days\/world-science-day-for-peace-and-development\/world-science-day-2016\/#.WCOzDrdOmUk\">Celebrating Science Centres and Science Museums<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting that these institutions nurture human curiosity, and catalyze research and solutions to help societies meet varied challenges, Ms. Bokova said they also bring together men and women around common values, providing platforms for dialogue, understanding and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>She added that science centres and museums also provide excellent ways to encourage children, especially girls, to pursue careers in science as well as serve as \u201cprivileged places of education,\u201d providing as innovative initiatives to promote the learning of science outside the classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this spirit, I invite all of partners and governments to do everything to support, nurture and harness the full power of science museums and centres to shape a more inclusive and sustainable future for all,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0012\/001246\/124687e.pdf#page=51\">Proclaimed<\/a> by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµESCO General Conference in 2001, the World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to renew national, as well as the international commitment to science for peace and development and to stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society.
