  {"id":25934,"date":"2017-05-08T14:59:16","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T14:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=25934"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:53:28","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:53:28","slug":"task-of-eradicating-poverty-must-be-met-with-a-sense-of-urgency-says-deputy-un-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/05\/task-of-eradicating-poverty-must-be-met-with-a-sense-of-urgency-says-deputy-un-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Task of eradicating poverty must be met &#8216;with a sense of urgency,&#8217; says deputy Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eradicating poverty remains the greatest global challenge, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said today, calling for a collective and comprehensive approach that recognizes the multidimensional nature the issue and its interaction with other aspects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAddressing poverty, inequality, climate change, food insecurity and a sluggish and unpredictable global economy requires integrated responses and engagement by all actors,\u201d Ms. Mohammed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/dsg\/statement\/2017-05-08\/deputy-secretary-generals-remarks-opening-2017-ecosoc-integration\">said<\/a> at the opening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/ecosoc\/en\/node\/984039\">2017 Integration Segment<\/a> of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is <div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[also] an indispensable requirement for sustainable development,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n<p>In her remarks, the Deputy Secretary-General highlighted the importance of broad partnerships and building synergies across all dimensions of poverty eradication and sustainable development, including with the different sectors of economy at national levels to address the complex interlinkages.<\/p>\n<p>Further, recalling that the first Sustainable Development Goal (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg1\">SDG1<\/a>) is to end poverty in all its forms, everywhere, she added that such efforts also provided an opportunity to gauge how national approaches and the recently adopted <a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/sdgs\/indicators\/indicators-list\/\">SDG Indicator Framework<\/a> can support each other in advancing integrated implementation and reviewing progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need options that will enable policy-makers at the global, regional and national level to foster coherent and integrated approaches to poverty eradication,\u201d said Ms. Mohammed, noting: \u201cExpectations are very high and now is the time. Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Photo\/Evan Schneider<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also speaking at the opening, Nabeel Munir, the Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council, underscored the importance of integrated policy frameworks given the interconnected nature of sustainable development (the economic, social and environmental dimensions).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe interlinkages between the different Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>) we have defined to achieve our common vision are explicit, unveiling potential synergies and trade-offs.
