  {"id":28196,"date":"2017-06-20T14:55:04","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T14:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=28196"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:52:05","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:52:05","slug":"record-high-temperatures-grip-much-of-the-globe-more-hot-weather-to-come-un-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/06\/record-high-temperatures-grip-much-of-the-globe-more-hot-weather-to-come-un-agency\/","title":{"rendered":"Record high temperatures grip much of the globe, more hot weather to come \u2013 Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Extremely high May and June temperatures have broken records in parts of Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the United States, the United Nations weather agency reported today, warning of more heatwaves to come.<\/p>\n<p>The heatwaves have arrived unusually early, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said, noting at the same time that <a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/news\/high-temperatures-and-heatwaves-take-hold\">average global surface temperatures<\/a> over land and sea are the second highest on record for the first five months of 2017, according to analyses by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).<\/p>\n<h5><em>Raging wildfires in Portugal<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>In Portugal, extremely high temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius contributed to the severity of the devastating, fast-moving weekend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=57004\">wildfires<\/a> that ripped through the country&#8217;s forested Pedr\u00f3g\u00e3o Grande region, some 150 kilometres (95 miles) north-east of Lisbon, leaving dozens dead and more injured.<\/p>\n<p>WMO reported that Portugal is not the only European country experiencing the effects of the extreme weather, as neighbouring Spain \u2013 which had its warmest spring in over 50 years \u2013 and France, have seen record-breaking temperatures. France is expected to continue see afternoon temperatures more than 10 degrees above the average for this time of year.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yUpxe4C4kaI?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h5><em>Plane traffic halted in southwestern US<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>On the other side of the Atlantic, the US is also experiencing record or near-record heat. In parts of the desert southwest and into California, temperatures have hovered near a blistering 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius).
