Underscoring the importance of information and communication technologies (ICT) in today’s world, the heads of over 20 United Nations agencies and offices have called for leveraging those technologies to \u201cfast forward\u201d implementation of the\u00a02030 Agenda<\/a>\u00a0for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0new report, launched today<\/a>, the senior officials also highlighted the critical link between information and communication technologies and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 2030 Agenda

[\u2026] recognizes the great potential of global connectivity to spur human progress,\u201d noted Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u00a0Secretary-General<\/a>\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Guterres in his foreword to the publication,\u00a0Fast-forward progress: Leveraging tech to achieve the global goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis report presents evidence of how Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ agencies are adopting \u2013 and adapting \u2013 ICTs to maximize their impact and help communities and people in need,\u201d he added, highlighting efforts underway to extend telecommunication networks and ICTs into remote areas; train and equip workers with new digital skills; and ensure that schools, hospitals, clinics and whole cities are smarter, more energy efficient and safer.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0five key areas<\/a>\u00a0highlighted as the \u201ctake aways\u201d in the publication include ensuring that no one is \u201cleft offline;\u201d recognizing the catalysing factor of ICTs for innovation and change; putting people first; importance of prompt action to leverage ICTs; and creating new .innovative partnerships.<\/p>\n

The report, coordinated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU<\/a>), was written as a collaborative effort between top officials from Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ entities and international organizations, with each leader selecting one Goal and explaining why ICT is important for it, including drawing on their personal insights.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ leaders have identified [\u2026], ICTs must be leveraged to advance achievement of all 17 of the\u00a0SDGs<\/a>\u2013 and we at ITU look forward to partnering with other Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ agencies to facilitate this,\u201d said Houlin Zhao, the Secretary-General of ITU, said at the report’s launch, in Geneva.<\/p>\n

The report’s release coincides with the ongoing 2017 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF<\/a>), the main Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ platform dealing with sustainable and inclusive development.<\/p>\n
