{"id":32205,"date":"2017-09-27T20:49:04","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T20:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=32205"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:50:12","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:50:12","slug":"north-africa-set-to-adopt-5-year-plan-to-boost-youth-employment-un-labour-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/09\/north-africa-set-to-adopt-5-year-plan-to-boost-youth-employment-un-labour-agency\/","title":{"rendered":"North Africa set to adopt 5-year plan to boost youth employment \u2013 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ labour agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fullstory\">\n<p>\u00a0With a youth unemployment rate at 28.8 per cent \u2013 twice the global average \u2013 countries in North Africa need to adopt a broader, more concerted response to tackle the crisis, the United Nations labour agency warned today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArguably the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/about-the-ilo\/newsroom\/news\/WCMS_577397\/lang--en\/index.htm\">single biggest global development challenge<\/a>\u00a0in the decades to come will be the need to integrate hundreds of millions of young people into the labour market,\u201d International Labour Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/lang--en\/\">ILO<\/a>) Director-General Guy Ryder told a two-day international conference in Geneva, which is expected to adopt a new five-year action plan to enhance youth employability in the sub-region.<\/p>\n<p>An ILO\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilo.org\/addisababa\/events-and-meetings\/WCMS_574491\/lang--en\/index.htm\">press release<\/a>\u00a0issued today said that in North Africa, only 16.6 per cent of young women and 46.8 per cent of young men are economically active, meaning that they are employed or seeking work.<\/p>\n<p>Among those active, 29.3 per cent \u2013 24.1 per cent for young men and 44.4 per cent for young women \u2013 are unemployed; and around 25 per cent of working youth are estimated to be living in poverty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to fill the youth employment gap in the North African region, we call on social partners, governments, workers and employers\u2019 organizations together with development partners, to renew their commitment and action on youth employment,\u201d ILO Deputy Director-General for Policy Deborah Greenfield said at the event, calling for a strong policy response to reverse these trends.<\/p>\n<p>Young workers are three times more likely to be unemployed than adults.
