The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization\u2019s (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO) was reappointed for a second term on Monday as the 17th Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO General Conference opened in Vienna, Austria.<\/p>\n

In his opening speech to the General Conference, Director General LI Yong said he was humbled by the trust placed in him to lead Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO for another four years, adding that he felt \u201ca sense of profound responsibility<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe global community is still facing a number of unresolved and urgent challenges,\u201d added Mr. Li. \u201cPoverty, unemployment, and hunger remain the most persistent and daunting tasks for our world. Climate change, resource-depletion and environmental degradation, as well as the potential impact of the latest technological revolution, add another dimension,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr. Li stressed that \u201cthe only way to solve the challenges ahead of us is in partnership\u2026in partnership with governments, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ sister agencies, the private sector, and civil society.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a video message, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u00a0Secretary-General<\/a>\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Guterres congratulated the Director General on his re-appointment, calling Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO \u201ca key voice on technology transfer, investment flows and skills development.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour efforts can help support economic transformation in Africa and in other regions, and, as we combat climate change, your work can facilitate the transition to low-carbon growth,\u201d underscored the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n

The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly president also congratulated Mr. Li, saying that he looked forward to working with him.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the General Conference, President Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k said: \u201cIndustrialization of the past may have earned a bad name. It may have made us think of pollution, wastewater or labour exploitation. But when industrialization is inclusive and sustainable,\u00a0the results are positive<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed out that it leads to decent jobs and improved livelihoods; fosters youth employment; and enable resource preservation and environmental protection, \u201cthese outcomes propel us towards eliminating poverty and hunger and reducing inequalities,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n

Under the theme \u2018Partnering for impact \u2013 achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,\u2019 hundreds of participants, including Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ senior representatives; Heads of State, ministers and other high-level government officials; and prominent leaders from the private sector, civil society and academia gathered to showcase Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO\u2019s initiatives, achievements and partnerships.<\/p>\n

As its highest policymaking organ, the General Conference assembles Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO\u2019s member States and approves the programme and budgets for the forthcoming biennium.<\/p>\n

It will also use interactive discussions to explore issues, such as gender, circular economy, and industry 4.0 and will spotlight Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO\u2019s leading role in the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa.<\/p>\n

The Conference will offer a fully immersive experience for participants, including innovative formats for the events, integrated exhibitions and networking spaces.<\/p>\n
