The launch of the Spotlight Initiative,<\/a>\u00a0a partnership between the United Nations and European Union, is an essential tool to make violence against women and girls \u201ca thing of the past\u201d, said Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Deputy Secretary-General<\/a> Amina Mohammed on Tuesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Addressing a leading forum on development in Brussels, known as European Development Days<\/em>, Ms. Mohammed said that the joint Spotlight Initiative was a key element for making Global\u00a0Goal 5<\/a> on women\u2019s empowerment, of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, a reality.<\/p>\n

Now in the third year of working towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs<\/a>), the forum this year is shining a spotlight on gender equality.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout equality and empowerment, we will simply perpetuate today\u2019s paradigm: trying to address all the world\u2019s challenges with only half the world\u2019s assets,\u201d said Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Deputy Secretary-General\u00a0Amina\u00a0Mohammed in her opening remarks.<\/p>\n

She painted a picture of women not fully included in decision-making, being subjected to a \u201cglobal pandemic\u201d of violence against women and girls.<\/p>\n

\u201cAttacks and discrimination are deeply embedded in social norms, attitudes and practices,\u201d she asserted. \u201cAddressing these mindsets will require significant investments of time, resources and political will.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ deputy chief cited the World Bank in detailing how women\u2019s equal participation in the labor force had the potential to unlock $160 trillion for sustainable development reinvestment.<\/p>\n

\u201cYet a stark reality prevails: more women than men live in extreme poverty,\u201d she continued, adding that the worldwide pay gap stands at 23 per cent, and gender roles have been too slow to change.<\/p>\n

Ms. Mohammed pointed to the benefit of reaching SDG 5 \u2014 for the more than 190 countries around the world who signed up to the Goals in 2015 \u2014 which calls for gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI often call it the \u2018docking station\u2019 for all the goals,\u201d she said, flagging that Spotlight builds on civil society leadership and aims to address some of the imbalances women face.<\/p>\n

Noting that worldwide, almost one-in-two women murdered are killed by a partner or ex-partner, she said that in some countries, \u201cSpotlight will focus on the most extreme form of violence \u2013 femicide.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOften,\u201d she continued, \u201cin the wake of these murders, we find that women have indeed reported to the police, or sought medical care. But service providers did not have adequate information or the means to identify the risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of the violence takes place due to the broader insecurity that women face, particularly where they are advocating for women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n

Ms Mohammed also underscored the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s commitment to lead by example by empowering women within the Organization itself, working towards \u2013 for the first time in Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ history \u2013 full gender parity in the Senior Management Group and among those nominated to be Resident Coordinators, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s team leaders on the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a long way to go.\u00a0 But we have a plan and we have the will,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n
