A new Fund to support Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ activities that will help countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals was launched today by Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Deputy-Secretary-General Amina Mohammed at a ministerial meeting to review financing for sustainable development.<\/p>\n

The Joint Fund for the 2030 Agenda\u00a0<\/a>is part of the Secretary General\u2019s proposals to reposition the United Nations development system, and aims to support governments to accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda.<\/p>\n

Ms. Mohammed said the new Fund will \u201cprovide some muscle\u201d to help Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ country teams support countries\u2019 efforts and priorities to achieve the 2030 Agenda – the global agenda that sets out 17 goals to promote prosperity and improve people\u2019s well-being while protecting the environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will help us hit the ground running and to pick up the pace,\u201d for financing the Goals, she said, cautioning that it was still only part of the estimated $300 trillion that will be needed.<\/p>\n

The Fund aims to raise $290 million a year and a number of donors announced contributions, including the European Commission, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.<\/p>\n

The Fund will identify and activate SDG \u201caccelerators that unleash rapid progress across different goals and targets at the same time, based on data, assessments and analysis carried out with national and international partners. It also aims to bring the United Nations development system together to deliver results by providing access to the combined capacity and expertise of the United Nations development system and make it available in a streamlined and joined-up manner.<\/p>\n
