{"id":50383,"date":"2018-04-22T13:34:55","date_gmt":"2018-04-22T17:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=50383"},"modified":"2018-08-10T11:23:42","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T15:23:42","slug":"climate-action-special-envoy-bloomberg-pledges-4-5-million-to-help-un-fight-climate-change-in-line-with-the-paris-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2018\/04\/climate-action-special-envoy-bloomberg-pledges-4-5-million-to-help-un-fight-climate-change-in-line-with-the-paris-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Action Special Envoy Bloomberg pledges $4.5 million to help Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ fight climate change in line with the Paris Agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p><strong>The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Special Envoy for Climate Action, Michael Bloomberg, announced on Sunday a contribution of $4.5 million to the Organization\u2019s Climate Change Secretariat, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵFCCC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The billionaire philanthropist and former Mayor of New York City, pledged last June to make up the Secretariat\u2019s funding shortfall, caused by US President Donald Trump\u2019s announced withdrawal from the historic 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\">Paris Agreement<\/a> on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The contribution will go towards general operations, including assisting countries to meet targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions in line with the accord, agreed by 193 States in the French capital.<\/p>\n<p>In late March, the United States Congress announced that it was cutting funding for this year to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵFCCC by $4.5 million; from $7.5 million, down to $3 million, according to a media release from Bloomberg Philanthropies.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bloomberg made the announcement of his contribution on the CBS television programme, \u2018Face the Nation\u2019, saying that \u201cAmerica made a commitment and as an American, if the government\u2019s not going to do it, we all have a responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\">Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/988092352437813249\">said via Twitter<\/a> that he was \u201cvery grateful to Michael Bloomberg, not only for his generous support to the United Nations, but also for his global leadership on climate action.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube fusion-aligncenter\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:360px;--awb-width:100%;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:60%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fMv4aNVXaA4?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay;
