The two-and-a-half-minute video played on the giant Reuters and NASDAQ screens in Times Square focuses on the contributions this community makes to families and local communities around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The cast features real people filmed in their workplaces and homes \u2013 among them, a firefighter, a police officer, a teacher, an electrician, a doctor, a volunteer and two same sex parents. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\">Secretary-General<\/a> Ban Ki-moon also makes an appearance in the video\u2019s final scene, helping to underscore the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s appeal for allies to join the push for greater acceptance and equality for LGBT people everywhere. The singer Sara Bareilles lent her support to the project by granting permission for her iconic song <em>Brave<\/em> to be used for the video\u2019s soundtrack.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-soundcloud\"><iframe scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"81\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/unradio\/video-promoting-lgbti-rights&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=true&amp;show_comments=false&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;visual=false&amp;color=ff7700\" title=\"soundcloud\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:10px;margin-bottom:10px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cLesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people are now reaching new frontiers and celebrating remarkable achievements. Despite this transformation, acts of discrimination and violence continue against the LGBTI community,\u201d said Michel Sidib\u00e9, Executive Director of the Joint Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Programme on HIV\/AIDS (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵAIDS<\/a>) in a video <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unaids.org\/sites\/default\/files\/20150517_PS_IDAHOT_2015_en.pdf\">message<\/a> to mark the International Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot tolerate picking and choosing rights in a modern society \u2013 a society where diversity is celebrated; a society where everyone, no matter where they live or whom they love, is able to live in peace and security; a society where everyone can contribute to the health and well-being of their community,\u201d he added, calling on everyone to join the movement for social justice, equality and equity, so that all people can live with respect and dignity.<\/p>\n<p>Adding her voice to this call for justice and equality, Irina Bokova, Director-General of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/unesco\/\">Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO<\/a>), pointed to evidence that shows that LGBTI young people are overwhelmingly exposed to stigma, discrimination and violence, with tragic consequences, including lifelong trauma and self-harm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor instance, a 2014 study, conducted in Thailand with support from Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO, revealed that 56 per cent of LGBT students had reported bullying in the last month. A significant proportion of <div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[them] reported missing classes, feeling depressed, having unprotected sex, or had attempted suicide,\u201d Ms. Bokova said.<\/p>\n<p>She highlighted the 2016 meeting of Ministers of Education at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO in Paris, set to be held on the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia next year, to launch the first global report on the status of education sector responses to homophobic and transphobic violence, including bullying. She said this will provide a review of the scope and consequences of the phenomenon across regions, with examples from across the world that illustrate a holistic education sector responses, and recommendations for improvements in existing policies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5404\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/05-14-free-equal-03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5404\" class=\"wp-image-5404 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/05-14-free-equal-03.jpg\" alt=\"Ahead of the International Day against Homophobia &amp; Transphobia, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Free &amp; Equal campaign launches new video celebrating contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people to communities around the world. Photo: Malia Hurwitz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also ahead of the International Day, which this year falls on Sunday, a group of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and international human rights experts also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=15941&amp;LangID=E\">called<\/a> on States to act to overcome prejudice and stereotypes through anti-discrimination initiatives in schools and public education campaigns. States must address intersectional discrimination and violence against LGBT and intersex youth on the basis of race and ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLGBT young people too often face rejection by their families and communities who disapprove of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This can result in high rates of homelessness, social exclusion, and poverty,\u201d the experts said.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, LGBT children are often bullied by classmates and teachers, resulting in some students dropping out. They may even be refused school admission or expelled on the basis of their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stigma and discrimination LGBT children and young adults face have a detrimental impact on their self-esteem, and are associated with higher rates of depression and suicide than their peers,\u201d the experts emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>In some countries, young LGBT persons are subjected to harmful so-called \u2018therapies\u2019 intended to \u2018modify\u2019 their orientation or identity. Such therapies are unethical, unscientific and ineffective and may be tantamount to torture, the experts explained.<\/p>\n<p>Intersex children and young people may be subjected to medically unnecessary, irreversible surgery and treatment without their free and informed consent. These interventions can result in severe, long-term physical and psychological suffering, affecting children\u2019s rights to health and privacy and may constitute torture or ill-treatment.
