The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum, held on 8-9 April 2019 at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters in New York, offers a unique opportunity for youth to voice their opinions, share ideas, and think together about what they can do to achieve sustainable development.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Presentation: Climate Action through the\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/b>ActNow.Bot<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Tolu Olubunmi<\/span><\/b>, an advisor to the United Nations,<\/span>\u00a0showcased a new Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in<\/span>i<\/span>tiative to catalyze individual climate action through the\u00a0<\/span>ActNow<\/span>.<\/span>Bot<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on Facebook Messenger. The Bot uses artificial intelligence to spur behavior change toward sustainable and environmentally friendly action<\/span>s<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Olubu<\/span>nm<\/span>i<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>stated <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Every action you take matters, adding that if you feel passionate about reducing your carbon footprint but don\u2019t know how to <\/span>take action<\/span>, the ACT Now<\/span>.<\/span>Bot can help. Go\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to learn daily activities, log your progress, see what others are doing, and share your action<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0toward a greener tomorrow. \u201cTogether we have the power as individuals to confront c<\/span>l<\/span>imate change and build momentum.\u201d Through daily action<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0you can he<\/span>lp\u00a0<\/span>save the planet<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Panel 1: Equal Education\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Y<\/span>outh leaders\u00a0<\/span>Jibike\u00a0Faborode<\/strong>, Jacob Thomas<\/strong>, and Victoria\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Ibiwoye<\/strong>\u00a0discussed the importance of equal and quality education for all. They support education that is gender-sensitive, inclusive, and empower<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0youth to work in a field they are passionate about. They emphasized the importance of activating youth power to achieve the SDGs<\/span>\u00a0and the need for youth to work with policymakers<\/span>. All three panelists believe that curriculum needs to improve to prepare for a more interconnected, diverse and technologically advanced future. The youth leaders called for\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>global mindset<\/span>\u00a0and more empathy. They strive for\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201dA just and equal world\u201d\u00a0<\/span>where\u00a0<\/span>\u201cinclusion\u201d\u00a0<\/span>is a priority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Panel 2: My Future of Work<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Do young people have a say in the direction of the job market? Guy Rider<\/strong>, Director-General of the International\u00a0<\/span>Labour<\/span>\u00a0Organization<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0believes that youth have the power to shape\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>future\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>jobs and advocate their\u00a0<\/span>economic\u00a0<\/span>policy preferences. Rider called for equal access to education<\/span>. Additionally, both panelists want to lower the<\/span>\u00a0skills gap in\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>global\u00a0<\/span>labor market<\/span>, which is undergoing a<\/span>\u00a0rapid chan<\/span>ge<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>He<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>believes it\u00a0<\/span>will be vital to have a labour force <\/span>that is\u00a0<\/span>able to re-skill <\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>up-skill, <\/span>while\u00a0<\/span>youth\u00a0<\/span>will need\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>be able to\u00a0<\/span>transition from school to work. <\/span>Rider took the opportunity to launch ILO\u2019s My Future of Work Challenge<\/em> – an<\/span> initiative that <\/span>call<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>you\u00a0<\/span>to post a video describing the future of work\u00a0<\/span>that you want\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>challen<\/span>ge\u00a0<\/span>three\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>f<\/span>\u00a0your f<\/span>riends\u00a0<\/span>to do the same. All participants are encouraged to\u00a0<\/span>us<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>#myFutureofWork\u00a0on social media.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Madelle<\/span> Kangha, Young Leader and Founder of Jumpstart Academy of Africa, explained that artificial intelligence is changing work as we know it and <\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>adjusting skills is crucial for preparing youth workers. Kangha believed that social and emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills are <\/span>increasingly\u00a0<\/span>valuable. Her program develops these skills to prepare African youth for work in the future<\/span>. She urged for more private sector investment in Africa\u2019s growing youth population.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Panel 3: Act Now for a Sustainable Future<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Yolanda Joab<\/span><\/b>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ound<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0Island Pride<\/span>\u00a0as a cl<\/span>imate change education programme to i<\/span>ncrease<\/span>\u00a0awareness\u00a0<\/span>and urgency toward climate action. J<\/span>oab is tired of the lack of urgency on climate action\u2014 it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0not just about\u00a0<\/span>her\u00a0<\/span>future but\u00a0<\/span>also her\u00a0<\/span>childre<\/span>n<\/span>\u2019s future<\/span>. \u201c<\/span>I<\/span>\u2019<\/span>m very hopeful because of the young people in this room\u201d. <\/span>Noura<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Berrouba<\/span><\/b>\u00a0from the European Youth Parliament mobilizes youth around critical issues regarding energy and climate to grow political movement<\/span>s<\/span>. She pointed out that climate policies have been delayed due to special interests that have<\/span>\u00a0been given greater power than the interest of people. She stated,<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWe need a system change<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which happens in politics<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>She made it clear that youth movements make it clear to decision-makers that climate change must be addressed. \u201cIf\u00a0<\/span>politi<\/span>c<\/span>ians won<\/span>‘<\/span>t step up<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>it<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s time to step aside<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Panel 4: Young Changemakers<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Sobel\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Ngom<\/span><\/b>, Founder Social Change Factory, highlighted the need for youth to come together to co-drive change.\u00a0<\/span>Ngom<\/span>\u00a0sees strength in numbers for youth to drive the change they seek. He advised young people that \u201cfailing is a part of the process\u201d and\u00a0<\/span>taking action<\/span>\u00a0will result in either success or an important learning lesson.\u00a0<\/span>Vibhu Sharma,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Board Member of Generation Unlimited stressed the need to increase empathy and inclusion. Sharma called for more inclusivity and involving\u00a0<\/span>people with disabilities to fully participate in<\/span>\u00a0work, education, and in life.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Panel 5: SDG World Tour<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Ashley Thompson<\/strong> and Stefani\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Christianti<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>discussed their role in the SDG World Tour initiative to accelerate the progress of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Their team will sail around the world from Amsterdam to New York beginning in 2020. Thompson and\u00a0<\/span>Christianti<\/span>\u00a0will sail to 17 countries in two years to promote each of the 17 SDGs. They explained that a diverse group of people from all over the world will be able to join them as they sail around the world promoting sustainable development. Each stop there will be Innovation challenges and youth leaders who will be able to share their new ideas toward advancing the SDGs. \u201cWe invite all young changemakers to join us.
