Minister for Foreign Affairs Margot Wallstr?m spoke on the telephone today to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary-General Ant¨®nio Guterres about the upcoming ministerial meeting on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA), which was convened at the initiative of Sweden and Jordan. Ms Wallstr?m stressed that the purpose of the meeting, to be held in Rome on 15 March, is to mobilise political and financial support for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA, which is currently facing an acute budget deficit of USD 446 million.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA assists more than five million Palestinian refugees, one third of whom still live in refugee camps, and plays an important stabilising role in an already troubled region.

Ms Wallstr?m thanked the Secretary-General for his strong commitment to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA and his leading role in improving its financing.
