The Bureau of the Committee met with Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Secretary-General Ant¨®nio Guterres to express concern at the worsening situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), including East Jerusalem. The Chair of the Committee, Ambassador Cheikh Niang (Senegal) encouraged the Secretary-General to visit the OPT as soon as possible to learn first-hand about the situation on the ground and provide much needed hope to the Palestinian population under occupation and attacks by extremists. The Bureau also encouraged the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ to find mechanisms to increase the protection of the Palestinian population. The Bureau emphasized the need to focus the attention of the international community on the question of Palestine and re-launch a credible negotiating process culminating in the two-State solution. The Chair also thanked the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ for complying swiftly with the General Assembly resolution requesting an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice. The need to provide adequate and predictable funding to Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµRWA was also raised. The Secretary-General reiterated the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ support for the two-State solution and looked forward to visit the OPT in the near future.
