Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA) announced today that it will halt the intake of new patients for ear nose and throat treatments (ENT), cold services and child births at the Agency hospital in Qalqilia in the West Bank. The decision to do this was taken pending an investigation into the recent death of a child and is effective on the 21st of August, 2017.<\/p>\n

During the interim, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA will contact all patients scheduled for treatment in these three categories to ensure they are redirected to an Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA contracted hospital. This practice is in line with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA health service provided throughout the rest of the West Bank as well as in the four other fields of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA operations across the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Primary health services offered out of the new, accessible and spacious Qalqilya Health Center, which was inaugurated in May 2016, will remain unchanged. This facility provides primary health care for approximately 54,000 Palestine refugee patients per year and is served by 18 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA health staff.<\/p>\n

The Agency will work with all relevant stakeholders to minimize any inconvenience to Palestine refugees resulting from this redirection of services.<\/p>\n

Following this latest announcement, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA will maintain a strong presence in Qalqilya which includes 3 schools serving approximately 1200 students, a Primary Health Center, a Relief and Social Services Office and a local Microfinance Branch.<\/p>\n

The Agency is committed to delivering health services to Palestine refugees in accordance with its mandate, its strategic framework and Agency-wide practices, namely through primary health care centers operated by Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA and referral systems for secondary and tertiary health care services. Intense efforts to reform the Qalqilya hospital have not been successful in the past years and the Agency is no longer able to ensure that medical services provided in the hospital meet the required health care standards<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA Programme Budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency\u2019s Programme Budget. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.<\/p>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
