The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres:<\/p>\n

We regret the United States\u2019 decision to provide no further funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA), which provides essential services to Palestine refugees and contributes to stability in the region. \u00a0The United States has traditionally been the largest single contributor to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA. \u00a0We appreciate its support over the years.<\/p>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA enjoys the full confidence of the Secretary-General. \u00a0Commissioner-General Pierre Kr\u00e4henb\u00fchl has led a rapid, innovative and tireless effort to overcome the unexpected financial crisis Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA has faced this year. \u00a0It has expanded the donor base, raised considerable new funding, and explored new avenues of support.\u00a0 In addition, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA took extraordinary internal management measures to increase efficiencies and reduce costs.<\/p>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA has a strong record of providing high-quality education, health and other essential services, often in extremely difficult circumstances, to Palestine refugees who are in great need.\u00a0 The Secretary-General calls on other countries to help fill the remaining financial gap, so that Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA can continue to provide this vital assistance, as well as a sense of hope this vulnerable population.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
