Turning to the finances of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East\u00a0(Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA), the Group was very concerned that the relief Agency was facing a deficit of\u00a0$446\u00a0million in\u00a02018, including\u00a0$49\u00a0million dating back to\u00a02017.\u00a0 The Group noted the Board\u2019s recommendations and emphasized that austerity measures are not the only path to help the Agency deliver on its mandates.<\/p>\n

In laying out the Board\u2019s recommendations, Ms.\u00a0Parama Sen, Director of External Audit\u00a0(India), and Chair of the Audit Operations Committee of the Board of Auditors, said the increased deficit in Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA stems from\u00a0$400\u00a0million in suspended contributions from a major donor in\u00a02017 and\u00a02018.\u00a0 The situation threatens the Agency\u2019s ability to deliver its core mandate to Palestine refugees. \u00a0As a short\u2011term solution, the Agency has requested advance payment from its donors to finance core operations for\u00a02018 and launched an internal campaign task force to mobilize resources.<\/p>\n
