PACC and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP sign USD 270,000 Agreement<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

to Enhance Anti-Corruption Efforts<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Ramallah, 30 August 2012 <\/strong>– The Palestinian Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) and the United Nations Development Programme (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP), in the presence of the European Union Coordinating Office for Palestinian Police Support (EUPOL COPPS), signed an agreement worth USD 270,000 to enhance anti-corruption efforts and increase citizen’s participation in the occupied Palestinian territory.<\/p><\/div>\n

The agreement aims at supporting the implementation of the national anti-corruption strategy; conducting a comprehensive public perception survey; and initiating a major public awareness campaign. Therefore, the project will create an enabling environment for consensus-oriented policy making, increased ownership of anti-corruption policies and create ground for an effective implementation mechanism.<\/p><\/div>\n

H.E. Rafeeq Al-Natsheh, Head of the Palestinian Anti-Corruption Commission emphasized the Palestinian National Authority’s commitment to fight corruption and highlighted the strategic efforts made by different institutions be them government, civil society, private sector and international organizations. In addition, H.E. Al-Natsheh thanked Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP and EUPOL COPPS for their efforts in fighting corruption and indicated that the Anti-Corruption Commission is working very hard to permanently end corruption in the Palestinian society and become a model to be followed regionally.<\/p><\/div>\n

“While it is imperative to develop institutional capacities, it is equally important to raise community awareness and build public trust,” said Frode Mauring, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP Special Representative of the Administrator. “We are proud to be supporting this initiative as anti-corruption work is core to the state building process. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP will draw on its extensive experience and network to strengthen cooperation and promote collective action against corruption,” he added.<\/p><\/div>\n

EUPOL COPPS' Head of Mission, Kenneth Deane, welcomed today’s donation as part of the overall efforts to continue assisting the Palestinian Authority in the rule of law’s consolidation including the fight against corruption. “Such measures to tackle corruption are key elements of an integrated anti-corruption policy that answers the expectations of citizens and we will continue to assist the PACC in this regard”, he said.<\/p><\/div>\n

The signing ceremony, which took place on 30 August 2012 in Ramallah, was attended by H.E. Rafeeq Al-Natsheh, Head of the Palestinian Anti-Corruption Commission, Mr Frode Mauring, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP Special Representative of the Administrator, Mr Mike Albers, Head of Programme Section (EUPOL COPPS) and Mr Theo Jacobs, Head of Rule of Law Section (EUPOL COPPS).<\/p><\/div>\n

This agreement is part of a USD 3.5 million programme on “Strengthening Internal Police Accountability, National Anti-Corruption and Civilian Oversight” <\/i>developed in partnership with the PA, civil society, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP and EUPOL COPPS and funded by the Governments of Denmark and Sweden.<\/p><\/div>\n
