Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Converses with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Aboul Gheit<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov on November 2 received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who arrived in Moscow as a member of the delegation accompanying President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt during his official visit to our country. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Priority attention at the meeting between Lavrov and Gheit was devoted to regional problems. They confirmed the identity of the two countries' positions regarding the necessity of looking for ways to settlement of the crises and disputes in the Middle East and Africa solely by political means, with the involvement of all concerned parties in dialogue and the negotiation processes on a generally recognized international legal basis. They stressed the inadmissibility of the use of force and the counterproductiveness of the use of methods of pressure and isolation in resolving international collisions. <\/p><\/div>\n

A thorough exchange of views took place on the state of affairs on the Palestinian-Israeli and other tracks of the Middle East peace process. In the conviction of both ministers, the active Russian-Egyptian foreign policy engagement in this area should continue to be oriented towards effectively helping to create conditions for the resumption of full-scale Arab-Israeli negotiations for the purpose of achieving a comprehensive settlement in the Middle East. The principal provisions of the roadmap for Middle East settlement can be and should remain the guideline for such movement, Lavrov and Gheit noted. In this context they voiced a shared opinion regarding the importance of combining the efforts of the Quartet of international mediators involving Russia and the regional sponsors of the peace process, including Egypt in the first place. Issues relating to developments in the situation surrounding Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Iran and in Iraq also were examined. <\/p><\/div>\n

The ministers noted with satisfaction the noticeable growth in recent years of bilateral business cooperation and the development of ties in all areas without exception. Taking into account the outcome of the talks held at the highest level, they voiced the confidence that the present visit of the Egyptian President to Russia would impart a weighty new impetus to building on the strategic partnership between the two states. <\/p><\/div>\n
