The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the situation of human rights defenders, Hina Jilani, will undertake a fact-finding mission to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 5 to 12 October 2005 at the invitation of the Government of Israel.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\nThe Special Representative will assess the situation of human rights defenders, and examine in particular both the legal framework as well as any possible limitations on the right to defend human rights in the country.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\nDuring the visit, she will meet with Israeli and Palestinian officials, national human rights institutions, non-governmental organizations and individuals engaged in human rights work in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as well as United Nations officials. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\nMs. Jilani, an advocate in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, was appointed Special Representative of the Secretary-General in August 2000. The visit to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory will be her ninth official country mission since the United Nations Commission on Human Rights created her mandate in April 2000. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\nMs. Jilani will hold a press conference in Jerusalem on the last day of her visit to present her preliminary findings. A report containing the Special Representative's complete findings and recommendations will be presented to the Commission in April 2006.<\/span>
