Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵITED ARAB EMIRATES DOUBLES CASH TO Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Jerusalem, 5th November 2007: The UAE is to double its contribution to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA’s regular budget from $500,000 to $1 million next year.<\/p><\/div>\n

Welcoming the news, the Commissioner-General of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA, Karen Koning AbuZayd, said “This generous donation on the part of the UAE will help my Agency continue providing education, healthcare, housing and social services to the long suffering Palestinian refugees we serve. This increase also reinforces the role of the UAE as a special partner of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA within the Arab world.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Through annual contributions and support for projects like the rebuilding of the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank and the Khan Younes camp in Gaza, the UAE government and the UAE Red Crescent have donated over $31million to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA since 2002. In addition, last year the UAE-based Zayed Bin Sultan Foundation pledged $6 million to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA for school improvement.<\/p><\/div>\n

A UAE delegation will be among those attending the upcoming annual meeting of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA Hosts and Donors taking place in Amman on 19-20 November. The meeting takes place against a background of increased pressure on Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA as a result of closures in the West Bank, and the crises in Gaza and the Nahr el Bared camp in northern Lebanon.<\/p><\/div>\n
